Witham U8s lead the way and enjoy fantastic success at Shorne Hill, in the Brooke Cross Country Competition!

15 Oct 2014

Saturday 4th October was a very wet and muddy day on Shorne Hill Farm.  This did not dampen the enthusiasm of our Pre-Prep Cross Country Team as they arrived to race against other local Prep schools.

After a brisk walk around the course with Mr Blake, it was time for the Year 3 girls’ race.  They all lined up and they were off... over hay bales, through very wet grass and down slippery hills.  The crowd’s volume increased as the leader of the race, our very own Millie Atkinson, jumped over the final tyre obstacle and sprinted towards the finish line.  All of our team of girls ran the course admirably and their combined places meant that, not only did we win the race, we also won 1st team place as well!

The boys race started much the same as the girls, with Witham Hall Year 3s lining up shoulder to shoulder with the other schools.  The race started with no falls from the Witham team and the field was soon led by Henry Farmer and Jack Braddock.  As the two boys hit the final tyre obstacle, they were both jostling for first place until right in the final few metres, Jack overtook Henry to claim the win.  A fantastic race, with Witham Hall securing 1st and 2nd places.  All of the boys team ran extremely well in the wet conditions and claimed 1st boys team.  Overall an emphatic Witham Hall win!

Prep Team’s Results:

In the Year 4 races, all the Witham athletes ran extremely well with Louis Batty, Hugo Shippey and Gigi Granger the pick of the runners finishing 10th, 11th and 16th respectively in their fields. The Year 5

races soon commenced and in a very large field of runners, Witham fought right until the finish line with the girls finishing 3rd in the team competition thanks to great runs from Jemima Paganuzzi and Sienna McAlpine in particular. The Year 6 races finished off a great afternoon of cross country and both the boys and the girls put in tremendous performances to give Witham every chance of  featuring in the top positions as a team. Sophie Hamilton ran a storming race to finish 5th with Georgia Blackman not far behind in 10th. Isabella Blackman who was asked to run just one hour previously, ran with real gusto and Ewan Rodell finished 4th in the boys race – a great end to a hard fought afternoon of cross country. Well done to all the athletes - you all put in every effort in the rain. A big thank you goes out to all of the parents, family and friends who turned up, braving the rain, to support the children.  We look forward to next year!
