Match reports for the first hockey matches of the half term
08 Nov 2017
1st VII v Thomas Deacon Academy U15
Witham – 5
TDA - 0
The Witham girls showcased some pretty ruthless hockey against a far more age superior opposition. The age certainly didn’t count for much as Witham moved the ball at pace, attacking down the right and dominating possession. The defence in particular stood firm with Lulie, Mia and Matilda working hard to restrict TDA’s chances. Well done to the girls on a fine display and thank you to TDA for hosting us so well.
2nd VII v Thomas Deacon Academy U15
Witham – 3
TDA – 2
The 2nd VII Hockey team played against an older (and bigger!) TDA team. It took our girls a while to get back into the swing of things after the half term break but to their credit we were the first to score. TDA quickly responded and caught us off guard, equalising from a penalty corner. Both teams managed to break through each other’s defence and the half time score was 2 all. In the second half we played with increased confidence and thought about our passing and positioning. Witham had much of the possession and were finally rewarded with a superb goal finishing the match with a 3 – 2 well deserved win. Very well done girls against an older team.
U12A v Old Buckenham Hall U12A
Witham – 3
OBH – 1
The U12 team came together for the first time this season and certainly did themselves proud. From the first whistle, Bella and Poppy lead by example and dictated the attacks. After a very open first ten minutes, the girls scored a well worked goal from the top of the ‘D’, powerfully struck by Bella and created by Josie. The girls soon went two up after good reactions in the attacking area and the team then started to control the tempo. In the second half and after a shuffle of positions, the team pushed forward in search of a third goal with Matilda impressing down the left flank. After a really even match in the second half, the match finished 3-1 to Witham. It really was a great match with some top hockey played by both sides. Thank you to OBH for being such good hosts and to the parents for all of their continued support.
2nd/3rd VII v Old Buckenham Hall 2nd VII
Witham – 3
OBH – 0
A mix of 2nd and 3rd VII Hockey girls travelled to Old Buckenham Hall and played extremely well together. Many of the girls played out of their usual positions but rose to the occasion beautifully. With much of the possession of the ball it wasn’t long before we were 1 -0 ahead and with confidence rising at half time the score was 2 – 0. OBH came back fighting in the second half and had a number of short corners awarded but they were unable to take advantage and score. Our girls worked hard getting back to defend when necessary and then pushing up when possession was gained. Our efforts were rewarded with another goal finishing the game with a 3 – 0 win. Very well done girls for your hard work and determination. Thank you to all our supporters for travelling to OBH.
U11A v Old Buckenham Hall U11A
Witham – 6
OBH – 0
Witham visited the beautiful Suffolk prep school on Saturday for several hockey and rugby fixtures. The U11 girls had previously met OBH in a closely contested Regional Semi-Final which ended up in penalty shuffles. Witham broke away early with Rose scoring our first goal within minutes. The girls worked together well, moving the ball around the pitch and switching it from left to right. Eliza, Matilda and Bunny all scored in the first half from both open play and short corners. OBH had several attacks but none got through our defence, leaving Charlotte to watch from the goal. Bunny and Millie slipped two away in the second half with lots of the girls trying out a variety of positions on the pitch. It was a great game and the girls loved visiting OBH, especially meeting the school Great Dane! Thank you to all of our travelling parents for their support.
U11B v Grace Dieu U11A
Witham – 0
Grace Dieu – 3
The Under 11 B team played their first fixture since half term against the Grace Dieu Under 11 A team. Witham started slowly and allowed the opposition to keep possession of the ball and attack our circle. As the game progressed the girls were able to clear the ball away from the defending end enabling the attackers to drive positively into the oppositions circle. The second half saw much more attacking play from Witham but they were unable to convert any of their chances. The Witham team were much more effective in defence, making sure Grace Dieu did not add to their first half score. Generally this was a positive performance against a physically bigger and stronger team.
U11C v Grace Dieu U11B
Witham – 5
Grace Dieu – 0
The Witham U11C girls were very enthusiastic in their preparation for their match against Grace Dieu’s U11B team. There has been a real passion among the new Year 5 goalies (Kitty, Clara and Grace) who are all training really hard and thrilled with the opportunities they have had with specialist GK sessions and lots of drills to hone their skills.
In this match against Grace Dieu there was plenty of liveliness up front too with Olivia (2 goals), Lydia (2 goals) and Poppy P (one) all scoring with flourish. Rosie J played with calmness and assurance in the mid-field giving the forwards plenty of good ball and winning herself promotion to the B team for the second half. Tilly and Ellie-Bella really worked hard to keep the ball under control and redistribute it with greater precision, and Sammie and Poppy MT were energetic and worked hard all game.Well done U11Cs - real progress to be seen here!
