1st VII hockey
Witham Hall 4 – 2 OBH
The first team played some of the best hockey of the term this Saturday against Old Buckenham Hall.
The girls moved the ball efficiently and effectively around the pitch, making use of the space available. The defence read the game particularly well and were able to stop the opposition from gaining and holding on to possession. Our time spent practising effective shooting in the circle and in particular getting into a strong position on the post, paid off with a well-taken goal.
The forwards drove positively into the circle and struck the ball very strongly resulting in two goals before half time. After the break, Witham had a lack of concentration for a few minutes which allowed OBH to score two goals, but composure was soon regained and the girls played some excellent hockey to score twice more. This was an excellent result against strong opposition.
2nd VII hockey
Witham Hall 3 – 0 Oakham
With a bitter chill in the air, Witham 2nds played Oakham U13Bs at home.
The game started brightly, both teams battling in midfield for possession. Both came close to opening the scoring, but it was Witham who eventually took the lead, through an excellent strike from Mollie.
Very soon after, Matilda doubled Witham’s lead with a deflected shot. Minutes before the half time whistle, Witham were awarded a short corner and Matilda extended her teams lead further, hitting a wonderful shot.
After half time, Oakham really came at Witham and thanks to some fine displays from Gigi, Bunny, Sophie and goalie Charlotte, Witham managed to keep a clean sheet.
Credit must go to Oakham who played a super game of hockey. A great result for the seconds and well deserved.
2nd VII hockey
Witham Hall 6 – 1 OBH
Next up for the 2nds was a home match against Old Buckenham Hall.
The game started well for Witham, who took an early lead thanks to an excellent goal from Josie. Their lead was soon doubled with a fine strike from Rose. Witham’s dominance continued as they battled hard in midfield, picking up the ball and getting shots in on goal. Lilia made it 3-0 to Witham, with a well taken goal, and just before half time, Bunny and Sophie added a goal each, giving the girls a 5-0 lead.
After the break, OBH battled hard, but Witham’s dominance continued. Bunny scored another great goal, taking their lead to 6-0. But credit to OBH, they never gave up and were duly rewarded, with a fine goal.
A great team effort from the Witham girls and a 6-1 victory. Well done!
3rd VII hockey
Witham Hall 5 – 2 Oakham U13C
Witham played one of their best games of the season against a strong U13C Oakham side.
Witham went down 1-0 in the first five minutes, which certainly gave them a bit of a shock. However, the team soon regained their confidence, with Isabella hitting the D and driving the ball to the far corner, followed by a short corner, where Isabella again, hit hard and scored. The forward and mid players, Izzie, Shivali, Daisy, Eleanor, Isabelle certainly worked as a unit and Oakham just could not get the ball from them.
In defence, goalkeeper Emma was confident and on her toes within the goal, which made it difficult for Oakham to find a space within the goal to score. Rosie and Isabella were a force to be reckoned with in the defensive line at the back and Oakham fought hard to break through for another goal just before half time. The score at half time was Witham 2, Oakham 2.
The second half was as exciting as the first, with both team believing and showing more confidence with their team play and working back to win the ball. Witham battled in attack and defence and their team work rate was phenomenal. Every Witham girl wanted this game and they gave me absolutely everything. Daisy broke through to score Witham’s third goal, followed shortly by two more goals by Isabella.
The final whistle blew after forty minutes of quality play by Witham.
A terrific game from start to finish and I applaud my wonderful team for giving me everything. Well done girls, I am very proud of you all. Thank you to Oakham for a great game and to all our fantastic supporters who give us that lift to work hard and give everything.
Witham Hall 8 -1 Oakham U12B
The U11A started the game with some trepidation, unsure of the challenge ahead.
The team started off strongly securing the first goal fairly quickly. Well done Georgia, a fantastic goal straight into the bottom corner. Witham continued to display a strong attack keeping most of the possession for the remainder of the first half, with another three goals being scored from Millie D, Alexandra, and a second from Georgia.
Starting the second half, Mrs Raitt made some changes to the squad to try out some new combinations. Oakham came back strong and scored a goal, making the score 4-1. Fortunately, Witham had fire in their belly and were straight back on the attack. Keeping possession, and taking on board advice from half term, Witham used the width of the pitch well, and so the goals kept coming. A well-deserved goal from Chiara, swiftly followed by another goal from Georgia after a beautiful pass from Millie D. Not dropping momentum at all, Alexandra scored two further goals to secure a fantastic win of 8-1, well done girls!
Witham Hall 1 - 0 Oakham U12C
The U11B hockey team had their first match after the half term break against a slightly older and taller Oakham U12C team!
Both sides worked hard and the possession of the ball was fairly even throughout the match. Our GK, Kitty, once again saved the day with numerous saves and the players in defence worked hard to clear the ball up to the midfield players. On occasion the stick work wasn’t as ‘tidy’ as it was before half term and the recall of tactics was a little hazy at times! That said, the girl’s persistence in our opponent’s circle paid off and the match finished 1 – 0 to Witham, well done girls!
Witham Hall 0 – 5 Oakham U12D
This was a very one-sided affair where the Witham girls spent nearly the entire time camped out in their defensive half.
Grace in goal did well to try to contain the onslaught as well as she did! Other notable performances came from Jemma who was voted player of the match for the Witham team. Katie also battled hard in mid-field and defence and Amelia also consistently gave the Oakham attack something to think about.
Witham Hall 0 – 0 Oakham U12E
This was a much better game, evenly balanced and the play was end-to-end throughout. The girls managed to begin to hold their shape much better and Flora had her best game of the season on the wing, where she held her space and consistently worked to provide other players with passing opportunities, making herself available in attack as well. Jemma was once again voted ‘player’ and Katie and Amelia teamed up well in defence holding firm. Jemima really improved in this game and started to chase down balls with more gusto and pass with greater accuracy. Well done!
