National Modern Biathlon Championship Finals 2018 at John Charles Centre for Sport, Leeds on Saturday 24th November 2018

It was heartening to see three pupils from Witham qualify for the National Biathlon Finals and all put in fine performances.
Jack B. competed in the U12 Boys event and went into the event ranked 9th. First up was his 50 metre swim where he swam a fantastic race recording a time of 33.94s improving his personal best by 3.48s putting him in 8th position after the swimming discipline. Jack then ran a superb 800m race getting his race tactics spot on and being rewarded with a time of 2m 28.30s, improving his personal best by 2.81s this was the 3rd fastest run time. When the points were added up Jack had recorded the joint second highest score of 2588, Jack winning a bronze medal on countback. This was a marvellous achievement to medal in a national finals and beat his overall personal best by 190 points.
Matilda H. competed in the U 12 Girls event and went into the event ranked 56th. Matilda swam a very good 50 metre race recording a time of 39.60s, improving her personal best by 0.4s putting her in 52nd position after the swimming discipline. Matilda then ran a competitive 800m with a time of 2m 52.09s, which was the 22nd fastest run time. When the points were added up Matilda achieved a total of 2132 which put her in an overall position of 37th and an improvement of 42 points on her previous best.
Samantha M. took part in the Under 10 Girls event and was ranked 56th going into the event. Samantha swam, showing great determination and posted a time of 47.43s, improving her personal best by 1.07s and this put her in 31st position after the swimming element. A well-paced 800m run rewarded Samantha with a time of
3m 07.91s, the 22nd fastest run time and a personal best by 5.2s. This meant a total point’s score of 20136 and an overall position of 30th which was an improvement of 108 points on her previous best.
All three pupils were great ambassadors for the school, showing great effort and determination, with all three receiving great support and encouragement from parents. A great day!
