U10A to Witham Hall Tournament

Group Stage:

Witham 5 -0 Laxton JS

Witham 4 – 0 Leicester Grammar

Witham 0 – 0 Bedford Modern

Semi-Final:

Witham A 1 – 0 Witham B

Final:

Witham 0 – 0 Kimbolton

As the starting whistle went against Laxton you could see the determination on all their faces. The girls, as they kept possession of the ball, showed good spacing and passing on the pitch. In the D, the girls held their positions well, with players on the post ready. Witham scored some great goals and worked together as a team.

The second game against Leicester also got off to a great start. All the girls worked hard and showed 100% commitment throughout the game. Again, some lovely passing to one another, which reminded the girls to look up before making their passes. This definitelhelped them, especially when receiving and passing the ball in the D. Overall, a good second game.

A tough game against Bedford Modern with end-to-end hockey. Although Witham had good possession in the D, Bedford’s defence made it difficult for the girls to succeed. All players worked extremely hard and showed great resilience throughout the whole match. The final whistle blew and the match ended with a well fought 0-0 draw.

Through to the semi-finals the girls played against their own U10B teamAll chased the ball with determination. Although the U10As had good possession the B’s made it difficult for us, using good tackling skills which made it difficult for them to find space in the D. At the very last second the U10As managed to score a goal just as the whistle blew. A very excited team ready for their last match of the afternoon, but well done to both teams.

The team went out with good spirit, ready to work hard, despite already playing many games. With end-to-end hockey, all girls had to work hard at finding the space and chasing the ball if possession was lost. A 0-0 draw was well deserved but meant five minutes of golden goal time on already tired legs. All girls started to show signs of fatigue, but they still gave it their best. After five minutes the score was still 0-0, so penalty shuffles ensued. After a tough fight between both teams, Witham were able to score the winning goal.

U10B to Witham Hall Tournament

Group Stage:

Witham 0 – 0 SJS

Witham 0 – 0 Kimbolton

Witham 1 – 0 Bedford Girls School

Semi-Final:

Witham B 0 – 1 Witham A

3rd/4th Play Off:

Witham 0 – 1 Bedford Modern

The U10B Hockey team took part in the annual Witham Hall U10 Hockey Tournament. Their first and second matches against SJS and Kimbolton respectively, saw all teams working hard to create scoring opportunities but with the midfield and defending players working tenaciously, the games both finished with a 0-0 draw. The final match in our section, again saw all our players working hard and they were rewarded by a smashing goal by Mieke, winning this match 1-0. Based on points scored for two draws and a win, this placed us second in our group. In the semi-finals the U10Bs faced the winners from the other section – would you believe it, the U10A Witham team. This match was incredibly exciting to watch with both teams showing determination. The U10B team worked tirelessly and a special mention must go to Jess H who saved numerous attempts by our opposition. However, with literally 2 seconds to go, the U10As were able to cross the ball over the goal line winning the match. This placed the U10Bs into the third and fourth place play-offs. With tired legs but still full of enthusiasm, the girls again worked hard trying to create scoring opportunities and they defended tightly. A number of short corners were awarded but Witham were unable to capitalise on this and, with a slight blip in concentration, our opponents Bedford Modern scored in the last few minutes. This placed the U10Bs fourth out of eight schools, a fantastic achievement as they were the only ‘B’ team in the tournament. Very well done girls.

U11A to Leicester Grammar JS Festival

Witham 0 – 0 Fairfield

Witham 6 – 0 Brooke Priory

Witham 4 – 0 Leicester Grammar

Witham 2 – 0 Ratcliffe College

Witham 1 – 0 Stamford JS

The U11A Hockey team travelled to Leicester to play in their annual Hockey Festival. After two weeks off, the girls were a little rusty but soon shook off the cobwebs and played some beautiful hockey. The first game against Fairfield was particularly special after losing 0-2 to them at the IAPS Regionals. Maddie made an astonishing save in goal as the Fairfield attacker sliced the ball towards the top corner, Maddie’s arm shot up and deflected the ball back to our defence who competently cleared the ball out of danger. Brooke Priory gave us an opportunity to shift our positions around and special mention goes to Olivia, normally our centre defence, who scored her ‘first goal in years’! Ratcliffe College gave us a challenging game with some very physical hockey and wayward aerial balls – Witham did well to score two goals. Player of the tournament was Matilda for her excellent play across the pitch and showing vast improvement since the start of term. A great festival, well done girls and thank you to our supporters who braved the cold.
