Witham Hall announces new Headmaster
22 Nov 2019
The Chairman of the Board of Governors at Witham Hall School, Mr Jeremy Sharman, is delighted to announce that the new Headmaster from September 2020 will be Mr William (Will) Austen.
Will stood out in the rigorous selection process as the leading candidate in an exceptionally strong field, which reflects the high national reputation that Witham Hall now holds in the prep school world. He has extremely high moral standards, a wealth of relevant professional experience and a personable leadership style. He is also an excellent communicator. Will was educated at Stowe and St Andrew’s University. He spent nine years at Summer Fields, Oxford, teaching science at all levels including scholarship groups, and coaching rugby, cricket and soccer teams. He was also master in charge of chess and organised school ski trips. He became a House Master before rising to be Assistant Deputy Head. Since 2013, he has been in his current position as Deputy Headmaster at Ludgrove School, a boarding prep school in Wokingham. He is responsible for both the pastoral and the academic direction of the school.
Will is keen to build on the amazing legacy he shall be inheriting from Charlie and Jo, about which he spoke knowledgeably and insightfully at interview. Will has been ably supported throughout his career by his wife Jossie – in his own words “his greatest asset” – whom he met at St Andrews. Currently she serves as Registrar and Head of Development at Ludgrove. Formerly, she served as House Mistress at Summer Fields and has an excellent background in school pastoral care. We are therefore equally delighted to be welcoming Jossie onto staff too.
There will be a number of opportunities over the coming academic year for the School community to meet them both, before Will and Jossie take up their posts formally in September. We welcome them warmly, in the confidence that they will take Witham forward into an exciting new chapter.
