Candlemas Service and Grandparents’ Morning

06 Feb 2015

Members of the Witham Hall community with their grandparents joined with folk from the Three Parishes at St Andrew’s on Sunday, for a special service to celebrate the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. 40 days after Christmas, this day sees the blessing of all the candles to be used in church for the next year, and a focus on Jesus as the Light of the World. We heard the story of the elderly Simeon and Anna’s joy at seeing the baby presented, and all lit candles to dedicate ourselves to a life of living in the light.

The Senior Choir sang ‘This little light of mine’ during Eucharist, and a joint choir of Witham choristers and singers from the three parishes performed ‘Candlemas’ by Martin How, made extra-special by the appearance of baritone Jack Lee, Witham alumnus and ex-chorister. He came over from Oakham, where he is in the 6th form, to sing the solo part in the piece.

Many pupils attended the service with their grandparents, and then repaired to the school for refreshments and tours of the school and grounds. It was a lovely chance to share our school with our families!
