Witham Hall 1st XI 7 - 1 Oundle U13A XI

Report

The 1st XI Hockey team put in a very pleasing performance against Oundle School U13As. A positive start with plenty of attacking quality, saw Witham take a quick 2-0 lead. The combination of Harry P, Oscar H and Rupert P caused Oundle many problems time and time again through slick, quick passing. As the game headed towards half time, the hosts started to carve out some good opportunities in front of goal, down the left-hand channel. Unfortunately, they could not quite get that all important first goal. In the second half tactical changes were made and again the 1st XI found plenty of success not only through the right-hand channel but the left, where James H held the ball up tremendously well bringing other team mates into play. Some excellent team goals came through this and with ten minutes remaining, Oundle scored a consolation goal but this did not detract from what was a strong first 11 a-side match for the boys, 7-1 the final score. With one game remaining this half of term, the 1st team can be immensely proud of their achievements.

2nd XI Hockey

Result

Witham Hall 2nd XI 4 - 0 Oundle U13B XI

Report

In their first game in as 11-a-side there was some very impressive hockey on display against Oundle. The boys were quick to pick up the new formation, and a solid understanding of the requirement of each position allowed the team to play efficiently. In particular, the press was effective and Oundle struggled to break out of their own half on numerous occasions. Positional awareness in the D was much more impressive than in previous seven-a-side matches, and the first goal scored by Henry P to put us in the lead was from a perfectly positioned cross in front of goal and swept in on the far post. Attacking changes were created aplenty by Louis H, Angus G-S, Arthur F and Rafe C to see us driving the baseline and creating space in the D. This enabled Arthur F to follow up on a GK clearance to score. Before half time Rafe C scored an impressive goal on the break, using his pace and skill to outwit the Oundle defensive line, in conjunction with his other teammates, to make the half time score 3-0.

In the second half fatigue soon set in. Henry F continued to distribute the ball well from the midfield to see us have our changes on goal. Oundle also stepped up the intensity of their game and put our defensive line under greater pressure. Ned B, Ollie G, Atan and Wilf remained calm and controlled under the pressure, and Tom M-C kept a clean sheet by stepping off the line with confidence. Rafe C converted his second goal of the match to secure a 4-0 lead when the final whistle blew.

3rd XI Hockey

Result

Witham Hall 3rd XI 5 - 1 Oundle U12A XI

Report

Witham started the match very well, moving the ball quickly and precisely. They created a few early chances, but it was near the end of the first quarter of the game, before Toby H scored a fine goal to give Witham the lead. Oundle kept pressing, but the Witham defence stood firm. Excellent tackling and clearing of the ball out of defence from Ben YC, further backed up by Aidan R and George P, allowed Witham to continue to dominate. Toby H scroed his second of the match and gave Witham a 2-0 lead. Oundle fought back, though, and scored a well worked goal, taking the score to 2-1. Witham then moved into another gear and wave-after-wave of attack resulted in lots of attempts on goal. Seb RW made it 3-1 with a great goal and once again Toby H was in the right place at the right time to score a further 2 goals, to bring his tally for the game to four and give Witham a final score of 5-1. A great game all round.

4th VII Hockey

Result

Witham Hall 4th VII 2 - 5 Oundle U13D VII

Report

The impressive 4th VII winning run came to an end against Oundle, having been unbeaten going in to the match. The six-man team put up great resistance, but were outplayed by the better team on the day regardless of numbers. Nonetheless, Austin held the middle of the pitch well and was supported throughout the match by Theo and Johnny. Isaac managed up front well and helped setup the two scoring chances, duly converted by Austin. The score line would have been much different were it not for the strength in defence, Freddie and Archie both held strong against wave after wave of attack by Oundle. There were some real positives to take from the match, despite the final score line.

Colts A Football

Witham Hall Colts A 2 - 1 Brooke Priory Colts A

Report

An entertaining match between two capable sides. Witham could have easily been two or three goals up before half time, but found the home goalkeeper on excellent form. A little more poise and precision in front of goal is important moving forward. Having deservedly taken the lead, Witham were then pegged back to 1-1 at half-time. The second half followed a similar pattern, except Witham had more possession but less clear-cut chances. However, just as a draw looked likely Witham snatched a last gasp and deserved winner to maintain the good start to the season.

Colts B Football

Result

Witham Hall Colts B 3 - 1 Grantham Prep Colts B

Report

The Colts B put in a very strong performance, continuing the effective passing and movement off the ball which worked so well in their previous match. However, something which the boys had improved on was their desire to win as many 50/50 challenges as possible. This allowed Witham to dominate in midfield and put the opposition on the back foot. Despite squandering numerous chances, the boys managed to finish off three very well worked goals. All boys played their part in what was a great team performance-we were assured at the back and our midfield worked hard to support both in attack and defence; meanwhile going forward we had the pick of the chances which was reflected by the score line: a 3-1 win.

Colts C Football

Result

Witham Hall Colts C  - 0 Grantham Prep Colts C

Report

The game was played in an excellent spirit, with both teams enjoying themselves, while keeping their desire to win. In the first half, Witham were a little selfish and were disappointed to only be winning 1-0 at half time. After the break the team looked to move the ball more and tried their best to test the opposition goalkeeper from range. Witham looked a more complete team in the second half and the score line reflected that. An excellent performance from all the boys. Well done.

U10A & B Football @ Laxton Junior School Festival

Report

After an excellent training session on Tuesday, the U10As and Bs made the journey to Laxton for four challenging games each. The moribund movement of the ball across a challenging playing surface forced our boys to think quickly about adapting their gameplay to the conditions. They did so with increasing success: a hard-fought victory against the hosts was followed by a more fluent win over Stoneygate for the As. The third round against Wellingborough provided an opportunity to allow players to experience different positions and challenges in both sides. In the final games against Brooke Priory, a team who had beaten us comfortably a few weeks prior, the boys showed how much progress they had made since then, with two dogged defensive performances which nullified their attacking prowess. As has been the case throughout the season so far, the boys were a credit to Witham in their sportsmanship and convivial company.

U9A Football

Result

Witham Hall U9A 4 - 2 Brooke Priory U9A

Report

The previous meeting saw a 2-0 victory in Witham's favour against a strong Brooke Priory side, at the end of a long tournament at Laxton Junior School. With fresh legs, it was once again Witham who scored first, as Macsen T slotted the ball past the Brooke keeper following some impressive link play. Brooke returned strong and, despite defending wave after wave of attack, Witham were unable to prevent the opposition from equalising shortly after, as Brooke capitalised on a momentary lapse in formation. Witham displayed some of their best football to regain the lead, Harry L seeing the ball to the back of the net. A handball in the Witham box, just before half time, allowed Brooke to equalise from the penalty spot. The second half saw both sides retain equal possession. Witham broke twice and found the back of the Brooke net on each occasion, to relieve the pressure and secure the win. Both sides entertained with some delightful football and played the game with impressive sportsmanship throughout.

U9B Football

Result

Witham Hall U9B 2 - 2 Brooke Priory U9B

Report

In an enthralling, end-to-end match, the U9Bs really started to find their feet on the football field on Thursday. A close-range goal was followed up by the goal of the season so far, with Edward S scoring from the half way line to leave things at 2-0 going in to half time. Brooke were very much still in the game and had some skilful players who were a constant threat in front of goal. As the second half got under way, the pressure started to tell and the score line quickly changed to 2-2. Pleasingly, the U9Bs held their nerve and kept working hard for one another, with the game ending in a 2-2 draw. Continuing in the same vein will certainly ensure more progress as we head towards half term. A big thank you must go to the parents who came to support the boys.
