1st XI Hockey
Witham Hall 1st XI 3 - 1 Spratton Hall 1st XI
Spratton dominated possession and moved the ball very well in the opening exchanges. However, on the counter-attack, the 1st XI were always dangerous with the quick front three of Oscar, Rafe and James. After ten minutes and a slick short corner move, the score was 1-0 to Witham, Rafe finding the back of the net with a well-placed flick. In the second quarter, Spratton also executed a well-worked short corner, following in on the rebound to score from close range. With the scores level, the 1st XI went into panic mode and lost their composure on the ball. Pleasingly, in the final quarter two more counter attacking goals were scored. A more calm approach was adopted, with more accurate passing on display. Defensively the boys were excellent, working in tight units and doubling up on the skilful Spratton boys. It was and always is a great game and a big thank you must go to all the travelling parents who came to cheer everyone on.
2nd XI Hockey
Witham Hall 2nd XI 8 - 0 Spratton Hall 2nd XI
A fantastic result for the 2nd XI. A number of absences resulted in Witham fielding the bare 11 players, including a last-minute call up for Thomas W in Year 6. The 3pm start time allowed the boys to have a full and effective warm up, and it most certainly showed with the team playing in an attacking manner with high intensity straight from the off. Toby was the first to set off our goal scoring flurry in the first quarter with two goals. As the game progressed the teamwork improved, with excellent link play from the half backs to the midfield, then up to the inners and forwards, which made us look extremely strong. We also set a great press and stopped the majority of Spratton’s attacks before they reached our half. However, on the occasion they did look threatening Ned B and Ned N stepped up, and Tom M-C in goal came out on top on three occasions with one-on-one’s to goal.
In the second quarter Thomas W converted two goals, before Toby secured his hat-trick in the thrid quarter. Atan came thundering through the midfield to score the sixth goal. The boys were buzzing and the atmosphere was electric. Moving into the last quarter Ned and Ned stepped out of defence, and James, Atan, Angus and Thomas T dropped back. The highlight of the game was the seventh goal; the ball was cleared from Atan at the back, through to Thomas T, Henry P, Thomas W and up to Ned B in front of goal. The ball was moved at pace and it was extremely slick hockey. Thomas W scored once more before the final whistle to secure his hat-trick in his 2nd XI debut to make the final score 8-0.
3rd XI Hockey
Witham Hall 3rd XI 1 - 1 Spratton Hall 3rd XI
The 3rds travelled to Spratton for another 11-a-side match. Spratton got the proceedings underway and both teams started well. Witham had more of the possession but thanks to some strong defensive play from Spratton, found it a challenge to score. Continued pressure from Witham, resulted in the deadlock being broken just before half time, when Archie P pushed the ball past the goalkeeper. After the break, Spratton began to put more pressure on the Witham defence, forcing mistakes. Spratton’s continued pressure resulted in a short corner being awarded, from which they scored a well worked goal. With the score at 1-1, there was everything to play for, for both sides. Both teams had chances to take the lead again but excellent goalkeeping and defending, prevented them from doing so. The final whistle blew.
