Witham Hall U10A Netballers win Oakham Netball Festival!

02 Mar 2015

The Witham U10 netball squad had been training hard in the lead up to the highly regarded Oakham prep school tournament this Sunday. We met nice and early and were first on the courts practicing our set plays and shooting, in what was quite a high wind. Witham’s first match was against Beeston Hall; this was a fantastic start to the tournament and built the girls confidence for the day - Witham won 10-0. The second match was not so successful against a very strong Stoneygate. We won the first half 1-0 but just never turned up for the second half, going down 1-4 and letting Stoneygate shoot time after time. This put additional pressure on the next two matches, the first of which being against S Anselm’s who only lost 4-3 against Stoneygate. It was a very close match with both teams working really hard and making great interceptions. Thankfully Jemima and Mia were on target scoring 4 between them, Witham took a 4-2 victory. In our final match of the morning Witham met Fairfield; we had to win this match to go through to the cup competition in the afternoon. Poppy and Bella made sure the possession stayed in Witham’s favour and fed the ball up the court well – final score 4-1 to Witham.

After a lovely lunch Witham met Laxton Junior in the Cup Semi-Final; Laxton had some very tall and fast girls which didn’t make it an easy game. Thanks to some outstanding interceptions in centre court from Ella, Bonnie, Georgina and Katie, Witham managed to keep the majority of the possession and win the match 3-1, putting us through to the final.

Unsurprisingly Stoneygate had also made it through to the final, making Witham the underdogs of the match after their 1-4 loss in the group stages. Witham marked tighter than they had done all day, their passes were stronger and they made sure they weren’t making any silly mistakes again after their last meeting with Stoneygate.  Lulie played a superb match at GK marking a very tall athletic shooter and forcing many mistakes. Jemima kept her cool and scored the 3 winning goals, fortunately just one more than Stoneygate could manage in the 12 minute match. This was a fantastic day and the U10 girls really did work hard to bring the U10 trophy back to Witham Hall once more. Thanks to all the parents for their support on the day; also thanks to Miss Rafferty, Miss Playford, Mrs Morgan-Jones and Mrs Edwards for their help on the day and leading up to the tournament.
