On a windy afternoon at Oakham the U10 boys did themselves proud and put in some excellent performances. In our first couple of group games we came up against Fairfield and Copthill. With the games being very short it was always going to be important for the U10’s to start brightly and they certainly did, carrying the ball well and passing accurately to team mates in space. What was incredibly pleasing about our first two victories of the day was the way the boys defended, not conceding any tries. In our third group game we played a well organised S. Anselm’s team who possessed a lot of pace out wide. However, after a closely fought opening, the U10’s asserted their authority on the game, absorbed a lot of S. Anselm’s pressure and scored some impressive breakaway tries. With three wins from three, the boys were on a roll but still had a very tricky final group game to get through against Beeston Hall. In a game where we found ourselves a try down, twice, the boys never gave up and managed to draw 10-10. With three wins and a draw we were through to the semi-final in the Cup Competition. Our opponent’s, Beachborough, had some very skilful and talented boys who exploited the U10’s lacklustre start incredibly well – we found ourselves 20-0 down at half time! What was most pleasing to see in the second half was the character that the boys showed where they did not concede another try and managed to get a late score to finish the game 20-5. This result meant that the U10’s then had to play St John’s College in the 3/4 play-off. An entertaining game from start to finish resulted in St John’s College winning 20-15. Although they boys ended with a loss, they should be incredibly pleased with the way in which they performed throughout the day, coming fourth is a great achievement. A big thank you to all the parents who came to support the boys!
