Colts A Football Tour 2015

23 Mar 2015

The annual Colts A football tour began with a Saturday afternoon Premier League match at Villa Park, where we enjoyed watching visitors Swansea City snatch a 1-0 win against relegation candidates Aston Villa.

We continued our minibus journey west (inspecting a local McDonald's on the way) and eventually arrived at Malvern College's prep school, The Downs. After a relaxing evening of table tennis and pool, the boys settled down for the night in The Downs' boarding accommodation.

We awoke on Sunday morning to a delicious full English breakfast to help us prepare for our match against The Downs' U11 A team. The contest started evenly with both teams passing the ball well. It was Witham who opened the scoring when Ewan Rodell calmly sidefooted home after a flowing move. Shortly before half-time it became 2-0 when we were gifted an own-goal after the hosts’ goalkeeper misjudged a backpass. The Downs attacked us hard in the second half but our boys were determined to preserve the lead. Oliver Allport and George Weaving defended heroically, 'keeper and man-of-the-match Robert Tombs made some superb saves, and our midfield trio of Harry Gillett, Alex Spragg and Harry Jones tackled hard and regularly threatened on the break. The result was sealed in the dying minutes when Witham were awarded a penalty, which was lashed in by Gillett. The final scoreline of 3-0 was perhaps a little harsh on The Downs, but that did not temper the Witham jubilation that greeted the final whistle – it was easily our season’s best performance.

We thank The Downs for their kind hospitality and a terrific football match, and well done to our boys for representing Witham so well with their immaculate behaviour.
