2nd XI Cricket: Final Report
30 Jun 2015
The 2nd XI has had a very successful season – Mr Whittock has been very pleased with the way the boys have approached their matches and training.
Their final stats are: played 8: won 6: drew 1: lost 1
Witham Hall 2nd XI (112-2) beat
Oundle U13 B (108-5) by 4 runs
The second XI maintained their unbeaten season with a thrilling victory at Oundle. Witham batted first and posted 112 for the loss of just two wickets in 20 overs. Our top scorers were Henry Saunders Watson with 32*, Will Moore with 30 and Will Chandler with 22*.
Oundle scored runs at similar rate to Witham and were left requiring four runs from the final delivery to draw level. Thankfully the ball passed safely into wicketkeeper Will Davison’s gloves and the match was won! Oundle wickets were taken by Will Moore, George Davies, Oliver Simmonds, Jamie Garvin and Frankie Atkinson, with George also holding a vital catch at fine-leg.
Witham Hall 2nd IX (162-5, 20 overs) beat
St Hugh's 2nd IX (15 all out, 6 overs) by 147 runs
Witham's 2nd team made it five wins in a row with another emphatic victory, this time in a nine-a-side match at St Hugh's. Our boys batted first and posted a mammoth total of 162-5 from their 20 overs. Joe Fox led the way with an excellent unbeaten 50, Will Chandler made an impressive 33 not out, and Will Moore smacked a quick-fire 22. Witham then dismissed the opposition in just six overs – Geordie Irvine and Toby Sumner each took three wickets, Callum Wass took one, Will Chandler achieved a run out with a terrific direct hit from mid-wicket, and Geordie held an audacious diving catch in the covers!
Witham Hall 2nd XI (164-2, 20 overs) beat
Worksop College Prep (29 all out, 19.3 overs) by 135 runs
The 2nd XI made it an unbeaten first half of term with an emphatic victory at Ranby House. Batting first, our boys set a mammoth total of 164-2 from their 20 overs. Opener Leo Cox batted superbly throughout the whole innings to remain unbeaten on 85. Leo was very ably assisted by the in-form Henry Saunders Watson, who was unlucky to be dismissed just two runs short of a half-century.
Ranby wickets were taken by six of Witham's eight bowlers: Oscar Fowler (2), Frankie Atkinson (2), Geordie Irvine, Joe Fox, Toby Sumner and Henry. Oscar held two catches, Leo held one, and Frankie and Geordie were both instrumental in run-outs as the hosts were dismissed for 29.
Witham Hall 2nd XI (78-3, 17.4 overs) beat
Wisbech Grammar U12A (75-3, 20 overs) by 7 wickets
The 2nd XI made it three wins from three with a pleasing victory at Wisbech Grammar School on a bright and blustery afternoon in the Fens. The hosts batted first but disciplined bowling and committed fielding from our boys restricted Wisbech to 75 runs from their 20 overs. Wickets were taken by Joe Fox, Alfie Buik and Leo Cox, and Oscar Fowler held an excellent catch at mid-wicket. Witham passed the target with 7 wickets and 14 balls to spare largely thanks to superb innings from Buik (33) and Henry Saunders Watson (22). Another fine result!
U12 Cricket and 2nd/3rd XI Cricket:
Witham Hall U12A v Wellow House U13A
Lost by 17 runs
On a sunny afternoon the U12A cricket team fought hard in a very close game against Wellow. Fielding first, the U12A’s bowling was inconsistent but pleasingly all of the boys bowled a couple of overs each. In the field we were outstanding, putting in some great stops and taking our catches well. After 20 overs Wellow had scored 119 runs. James Tattersall (7-0 off 5 overs), Frankie Atkinson (10-0 off 2 overs) and Toby Coulson (18-2 off 3 overs) were the pick of the bowlers. With bat in hand the U12A’s struggled, with four wickets falling in quick succession in the first 10 overs for just 1 run. However, Toby Hanson (33) batted superbly, watching the ball closely onto the bat and playing it late right under his eyes, which was required. Toby was ably supported by Will Chandler (not out 12) and Hans Mehta (8); Will and Hans moved their feet well and looked to get the score board ticking over. Unfortunately with Toby losing his wicket and with the required run rate increasing, the U12A’s were bowled out for 102. Wellow were deserved winners, batting and bowling incredibly well.
Thomas Deacon U12 A (165-4, 20 overs) beat
Witham Hall 2nd/3rd XI (98-7, 20 overs) by 67 runs
Witham's mixed 2nd/3rd XI found the going tough against a talented Thomas Deacon Academy
U12 A side. Our visitors batted first and posted a commanding total of 165 runs thanks to some impressive strokes combined with wayward bowling and occasionally sloppy fielding. Two wickets were taken by Toby Sumner, one by Jamie Garvin, and Archie Smith-Maxwell achieved a run-out with a superb direct-hit. Our batsmen never really looked like they were going to challenge the target, but positives can be taken from Geordie Irvine's impressive 27* and Jamie's industrious 25.
