Witham Under 13 A/B wins v Wellow House U13A
Witham 1 Wellow House 0
A combined A/B Under 13 hockey team travelled to Wellow to play their first seven on Wednesday. The game was played on a small grass pitch which the Witham girls took a bit of time to get used to. Wellow had one very strong player who tried to dominate all of her team’s play and at the beginning Witham found the ball was attracted to her stick, but as the game progressed she tired and using some quick passing Witham started to shut her out of the game. Sophie Hamilton and Georgia Blackman were solid in defence ably assisted by Lottie Sharman when Georgia was hit by a powerful shot at goal. Ella Turner worked hard in midfield distributing the ball well to Sienna Bowman and Pippa Thompson on the wing. Anya Batty made some very positive runs into the D and was unlucky not to score. Tilly Conant positioned herself beautifully to push in a rebound to score the only goal. In goal for Witham Isabel Blackman had another fantastic game, especially considering this was only her second time in the position. She made correct decisions when letting the ball cross over the backline and made some excellent saves from powerful shots. This was a very pleasing all round performance.
Witham Hall U11A v Wellow House U11A
Witham: 9 Wellow: 0
Witham made an impressive start to the hockey term with a 9-0 victory against Wellow’s U11A team. With minimal training under their belts and less than a week into the Michaelmas term it was fantastic to see such motivated, skilful and cohesive hockey.
With 10 players to rotate through the team the girls did very well to adapt to playing a variety of different positions and even executed some successful short corners. Ella, Katie, Lulie, Bonnie and Bella were all goal scorers and although the defence weren’t threatened too often, when the attack came they kept their composure and stopped Wellow from even getting a shot at Georgina in goal. Mia did a superb job leading her team to victory as captain amongst all of her Birthday celebrations! An exciting start to the season indeed!!
Witham U11 Team Marie wins v Wellow House
The Witham U11s began the season with a challenging tie against Wellow U10As. The girls had shown great promise in pre-season training and they took to the field with an air of positivity. Having already played one game immediately beforehand, the Wellow girls were a little nervous at running out of steam, but they provided a tough challenge. Despite some real competition in the middle of the pitch, Witham soon found themselves in the lead with great work from Izzy Golland and Rose Brassey. It was Rose who scored the goal, and this was followed with two more goals from Izzy Golland and Sophie Marshall. The half time score was 3-0 to Witham.
In the second half, the Wellow goalkeeper and defence were in inspired form. Although the final score remained at 3-0, the Witham girls put in arguably a better performance than the first half, with Josie Turner and Ffion Trundell playing superbly in defence as well as supporting attacks when appropriate.
A great start to the season girls!
Witham U11 Team Welch v Wellow House U10A
Score : Witham 1 Wellow 0 (Isabella Beattie 1)
Team : GK /Captain Jemima Foljambe, Arabella Nolan, Isabella Beattie, Matilda McKay, Hera Chatterton, Kitty East, Matilda Craven, Maddie Bryars, Eleanor Tickler (ab)
Team Welch made a good start to the season, playing Wellow’s Under 10 side. After a quiet first five minutes, the girls got used to their playing positions and started to hit the ball with confidence and belief. Captain Jemima Foljambe led from the back, playing her first game in goal and certainly played extremely well. Defensively, Witham were tackling hard, with Hera Chatterton dominating the middle, supported by Arabella Nolan and Kitty East. In the midfield, Tilly Craven, Matilda McKay and Maddie Bryars passed the ball through the channels and gave our forward Isabella Beattie time to drive to the attack. Isabella scored just before half time, which was a good position to be in, going into a half time talk. The second half was better in terms of organisation and Witham started to spread out, which allowed the ball to travel into space. Wellow fought hard, but just couldn’t break our line of defence. The final score was Witham 1, Wellow 0. Congratulations to Team Welch on a super performance. A great start to the season – well done. Well done to Hera Chatterton, who was Man of the Match. Thank you to all our touchline supporters who cheered and supported the team throughout.
U9 Hockey Team wins v Wellow House
All the year 4 girls turned out last Wednesday for their first match of the term v Wellow House. Matilda Halford was Captain for the afternoon and certainly led by example. The girls were divided into two teams and each team played two quarters each. The Witham girls enjoyed a fantastic win and made a very positive start to their hockey season. Wellow defended well in the first half and we crowded each other too much not allowing our attack to get the space in front of goal that they needed in order to convert more of their chances. However in the third quarter the spacing was better, the pitch opened out and the ball travelled down both ends. By the final quarter Wellow had rather run out of steam and the Witham girls really began to capitalise from their better spacing. Isabelle Blythe and Molly Deaton were particularly disciplined keeping to their role and supplying the attack with good ball. Goals were scored by: Matilda (2); Bunny (2); Lilia (3); Charlotte (1); Tilly (1). Well done!
