Chess success at Eton

24 Sep 2015

On Sunday the 20th of September the Witham Hall Chess Team travelled to Eton College to participate in the English Schools Rapid Play tournament, in which 40 different schools took part. Witham Hall provided one of the youngest teams present,  and seeded 39th out of the 40 we had quite a battle on our hands!

In the first round we were drawn against a much higher seeded team and despite the boys putting up a good fight, we were unable to secure a point.  In the second round the team bounced back, achieving in wins on all 6 boards. We then faced a much more experienced school  in the third round and managed  only 1 win.  However, undaunted, during the 3 next rounds we really got into our stride, winning matches against older opponents in each case.

The boys had a great day and enjoyed the experience of playing at Eton College, we also managed to meet up with ex Witham pupils Charlie Thain and Freddie Arlott. Every boy won at least 1 match and ended the day with a total of 13 points between them, only two points away from qualifying for the National Finals and finishing joint 29th out of 40 teams - just behind Oundle and St. Paul's Girls School and level with King's Canterbury!

Once again thank you to Vanessa Tombs, to Ethan Brewster who assists with Chess club as part of his DoE,  and to Nick Dickens for driving us all down to Windsor.

The Witham team was: Robert Tombs (C) Rori Rodell, Noah Cooper, Ewan Rodell, Richard Tomlinson, Sam Smith and Alex Spragg.
