Witham Hall Biathlon team go to the Regional Championships

09 Oct 2015

On Sunday 4th October, 15 of Witham’s finest Biathletes headed to Nottingham to compete in the Regional Biathlon Championships. The brand new facilities, including a 50m pool, opened just a few weeks ago! It made for the perfect location.

Our U10 girls were Millie and Gigi; they had to swim 50m freestyle and run 800m. It was a close race in the pool but Gigi placed 3rd with Millie just behind in 4th. It wasn’t too long before the girls found themselves on the track; they both ran very well with Millie coming 2nd in 3.16 and Gigi 3rd in 3.19. Both girls had a spot on the podium with Millie taking silver and Gigi bronze.

The U10 boys were also very successful with Charlie leading the way; he finished 4th in the pool with a time of 51.79 against a large field, and 2nd on the track in 3.12, thus gaining him a silver medal! Henry also received a medal for placing 5th overall and joint 2nd on the track with Charlie. Kit also did very well but just missed out on a medal placing 7th.

The U11 girls did well against some tough competition from 7 other schools. Ffion was our top placed girl in 5th- she was 6th in the swim in 40.03 and 4th in the run with 3.06. Josie was only just behind her in 6th; placing 9th (47.6) in the pool and 6th (3.12) on the track. Matilda had a superb run considering she was one of the youngest in the category, placing 5th with a time of 3.08.

Our U12 girls were Harriet and Alice; they competed well against a large field but unfortunately missed out on a spot on the podium. Despite Alice placing 2nd in the run with a time of 3.01, her swim let her down and she placed 6th overall. Harriet also ran very well with a time of 3.07 but like to Alice her swim wasn’t enough against the children from swimming and pentathlon clubs that they were up against.

The U12 boys were in a similar position to the girls and just couldn’t compete in the pool. Ewan had an outstanding run and although he didn’t place in the top 6 overall, he did get a special mention in the prize giving; he completed his 800m in 2.40 and 1st place. Finn placed 6th in his run (3.02), 6th in his swim (38.0), and 6th overall and received a medal.

Our two U14 competitors did well considering they are both very young for their age groups. Rori placed 3rd overall and ran 1600m in a time of 5.43; Ella came 6th in her swim with a good time of 1.20 over 100m, and 2nd in her run with a time of 6.24, equating to 4th place.

All of the children were an absolute credit to the school throughout the day. Now we need to wait to see if anyone’s results qualify them for the Nationals! Thank you so much to those parents who gave up their Sunday to come and support, as well as Mrs Morgan Jones, Mr Westcott and Mr Hounsell.
