Year 5 Geography Trip to Grange Farm
16 Oct 2015
On Thursday our Year 5 pupils enjoyed a fantastic morning at Grange Farm, Dunsby.
The visit began with an introduction to arable farming and the NFU’s ‘Red Tractor’ assurance scheme. We handled a range of crops before going out to a field to see wheat being established and satellite-tracked tractors in action. We also learned about soils, irrigation and drainage.
After that we went to the neighbouring dairy farm where we viewed the cows’ housing and the milking parlour, before watching the head herdsman demonstrate how to trim a cow’s hooves!
We then viewed a private collection of vintage agricultural machinery – quite a contrast to the giant modern tractors and combine harvesters of today!
We thank Mr and Mrs Atkinson for their generosity in organising the morning and looking after everybody so well – we would love to come back next year!
