Chess - National Schools U13 Qualifiers
01 Dec 2015
It's been a very exciting and successful few weeks for chess at Witham Hall. We hosted, for the first time, a County match, bringing together the strongest U18 and U13 players from Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Northamptonshire and Leicestershire. The Lincolnshire squad included Witham pupils Robert Tombs, Rori Rodell and Ewan Rodell, who all put in fantastic performances at this very high level.
The National U13 Schools Regional semi-finals were held at Bourne Grammar school with teams from a wide area attending. Witham players were on form with the A team clear winners qualifying for the National Finals on the 16th April 2016, and the B team were not far behind and they get another chance to qualify in a few weeks. The A team consisted of Robert Tombs, Rori Rodell, Ewan Rodell and Richard Tomlinson, the B team was Hamish Gordon-Stewart, Alex Spragg, Sam Smith and Kit Parkinson.
Next term we will once again be running the Delancey National Individual Competition, the opening rounds are played in school after which the children who achieve enough points go on to play in the mega-final, held in Lincoln. We will be running this predominately in the Thursday morning breakfast club to ensure that as many children as possible get the opportunity to take part.
Finally, this Saturday sees several of our children taking part in the Stamford Festival of Chess. This is one of the main qualifying competitions for the under 11 and under 9 county squads; good luck to them all!
