Witham Girls’ Hockey: final round up!

11 Dec 2015

1st VII:

Witham Hall 3

Brandeston Hall 0

Witham had played Brandeston Hall at the beginning of the season whilst on tour with the match finishing as a very tight 1-1. Witham were lucky to keep that score line on that day but this later match certainly showed the progress made by each member of the team. The girls knew from their experience that they had to stay alive in the tackle with so many skilful players in the opposition. From the push back, Witham worked tirelessly on and off the ball. The first half was shattering for the team as they pressed high up the pitch but tracked back with endeavour. Just seconds before half time Philippa smashed in brilliantly after superb work from Alice and Anya – a perfect time to score. The girls entered the second half knowing they could kill the game off with an early goal and they didn’t stop working until they got it. The ball was moved superbly down the right hand side many a time by Isabella and Ella where Philippa was on hand to reap havoc. Two quick goals followed from Isabella and Anya which topped off a superb display.

The result and the performance showed not only the progress made compared to their opposition but the individuals’ commitment towards the team – it genuinely was a pleasure to watch!

Witham 0

Stoneygate 1

The Under 13 B girls played against Stoneygate on Wednesday. The two teams were fairly evenly matched with both having good periods of possession in the first half. When Stoneygate threatened the Witham goal Isobel Blackman coped extremely well and cleared the ball decisively. Witham were unable to convert any of their chances which was unfortunate, as Stoneygate scored resulting in a win for them.

Witham 5

Stamford 1

This was a fantastic performance from the Witham team. The defence was able to stifle the Stamford attack quickly not allowing them any time in the circle to shoot meaning they had few chances to score. Having taken control of the ball the defence then passed the ball out wide to the wing who drove forcefully down the pitch before crossing to allow the forwards to score. The whole team played extremely well - this was a performance that showed that the hard work in practices pays off.

Witham 1

Oundle 2

This game was played under threatening skies and for the first time this season this was an eleven aside game. Both teams were evenly matched for the first few minutes with both goals coming under threat, but Izzy Blackman comfortably dealt with the shots by Oundle. Oli Rymer played well in midfield dribbling skilfully into space and passing the ball effectively. A well worked short corner saw an excellent strike from Abbie Leverton hit the back of the Oundle goal. At half time Oli was replaced at Oundle’s request and this combined with Oundle’s more aggressive approach meant that Witham had much less of the ball. Abbie and Chloe Howard both had good games on the wings driving forcefully onto the few opportunities they had with the ball. Zara Williams had a good game in defence and Jess Stamp worked hard in mid field. Unfortunately Oundle ran out winners, deservedly so on their second half performance.

Witham Hall Triangular Match vs Wisbech and Ranby

Witham Hall vs Wisbech

Witham Hall vs Ranby

Ranby 1

Witham and Wisbech played off first in a rather dreary fashion! Wisbech were evidently the more skilful side, scoring 5 goals-nil in the first half of the match. Witham appeared to be asleep in the first half as they seemed to be watching more of the game themselves than actually playing. Their second half was a lot better as they began to play more defensively, only allowing Wisbech to score once more for the rest of the game.

The U13C’s quickly recovered from their previous match and played superbly against Ranby, winning 6-1. Their continuous support and encouragement throughout the match lifted their spirits and allowed them to play their very best hockey. Finn and Kate both scored two goals each, and Cecily and Pippa both scored a goal also. Their attitude was fantastic and they should be proud of the way that they conducted themselves following their previous match.

Witham Hall 3

Oakham U12C 1

The Witham girls played a strong offensive first half with their captain Tilly scoring the first goal and Cecily scoring the second. In the second half, the Witham girls had to be careful and play sensibly after Oakham scored a goal within the first 10 minutes. Not long after Pippa and Tilly teamed up as a dangerous pair that Oakham could not stop. Pippa passed a beautiful ball to Tilly who slammed it straight into the goal. The Witham Girls were able to gracefully maintain their lead to earn themselves another win for the season.

Witham  3

Spratton Hall 1

Witham welcomed Spratton Hall for the U11A team’s penultimate game of the season. With fresh legs after a rested weekend the girls were fired up and ready to play. Witham made a good start, getting on the attack straight away. Bonnie made a break and a ball played in from Bella to Bonnie on the far side was quickly converted into a goal. Spratton put up a tough battle and the girls had to work hard throughout the match, backwards and forwards up the pitch. Poppy tackled hard in defence, keeping her stick down and moving the ball. Ella worked in our second goal after finding some space. Spratton retaliated to this with a strike into the top left corner putting the score at half time to 2-1.

Georgina made some superb saves, stretching herself and saving many shots. Mia and Lulie distributed the ball well in the second half and fed the ball out to Sienna on the wing who beat 3 players before feeding the ball into the D and winning a short corner. Spratton gave away 3 short corners in a row as a result of Sienna’s efforts and Ella struck the ball into the bottom left corner with great flare. Katie worked her socks off up the wing, ensuring she was supporting the defence and attack. Bonnie had several superb breaks, resulting in 1v1 on the keeper that she didn’t quite manage to convert but still demonstrated her skill breaking away from such strong defenders. Another superb win for the U11A girls – very well done.

Witham  2

Brandeston Hall  0

Witham hosted Brandeston Hall U13A and U11A teams as part of their hockey tour. The U11A game was closely matched throughout with Georgina saving the day on several occasions and keeping a clean sheet. Brandeston’s attack tested our defence and pressed high in attack. Katie and Bella worked very hard down the wings but two well worked goals between Bonnie and Ella meant that Ella hit the backboard twice in the first half. Brandeston regrouped at half time and came back strong, keeping the second half to 0-0. A fantastic game from both sides and a good win for Witham against such a big hockey school!

Witham 8

Stoneygate 0

The U11 girls had lots of pent-up energy after a week of exams and were ready to face Stoneygate! Despite not having training for a full week the girls started really strongly, getting into the Stoneygate D within the first 60 seconds. Unfortunately some frustrating play for the girls meant they were not awarded short corners from their attacking play. Bonnie was our first goal scorer with a sweeping hit from the top of the D, closely followed by a well worked goal being sent to Katie on the far post who finished it off. Ella put goal number 3 on the score board with a big hit, not long followed by Bonnie and Katie’s 2nd goals. A shuffle around of players meant that Mia and Lulie had a chance to be involved and played up the pitch, Poppy had several successful attacks as centre forward and Sienna hassled well at bottom diamond. Ella did all of the scoring in the 2nd half scoring a hat-trick to take her total to 4. Stoneygate had a good player on the left but Bella managed to keep her success to a minimum and Stoneygate only managed to get into our defensive D a couple of times with Georgina touching the ball only once.
