Witham Senior Girls Hockey Report

02 Oct 2014

The 1st VII leads the way but a pleasing strength in depth on show!

1st VII:

Formarke Hall Tournament

WHS 1  S. Anselm’s 0 (Hattie Grace)
WHS 1  Foremarke Hall 0 (Felicity Bridges Webb)
WHS 0  Beeston Hockey Club 1
WHS 5  Grace Dieu 0 (Sophia Ktori, Hattie Grace 2, Felicity Bridges Webb & Isabella Manara)

The girls travelled to Foremarke in confidence on the back of recent victories however the confidence didn’t shine through in the early stages. Witham drove forward persistently but each time lacked the final product. Finally with two minutes remaining, Hattie Grace capped off a smart move to take the momentum into the next match. Foremarke were next and a team that the girls had played twice already, both ending in draws. The game was tight with chances for both sides with Jenna Lloyd always alert but Witham pressed hard and with ten seconds remaining, a through ball by Felicity Bridges Webb bobbled towards the goal and deflected in over the keepers foot; lucky but well deserved! Three minutes into the Beeston Club match, Sophia Ktori took a ball to the knee and unfortunately had to leave the pitch. With a late injury to Poppy Chatterton Witham had to play out the match with 6 players. The girls worked tremendously hard for each other and it really was a sight to see despite losing 1-0. Sophia returned to the pitch for the final match which Witham won emphatically with Catherine Swanston providing stability at the back, Philippa Hix growing in confidence through the middle and Isabella Manara topping off a superb performance at the back post with a neat finish. Well done girls – a truly magnificent effort by all!

Witham Hall 2

Worksop Prep School 0
Hattie Grace  1
Felicity Bridges Webb  1

The girls worked hard in the first half but once again the lack of talking amongst the players meant good possession went astray and chances were missed. Late into the first half, Witham finally made their pressure tell with a clinical finish from Hattie Grace. In the second half, Witham continued to press but once again chances were missed after some neat play in the middle of the pitch. Felicity Bridges Webb and Philippa Hix terrorised the defence consistently but the final ball through to the attack was lacking. Lottie Bingham worked tirelessly all afternoon and her pressure forced a loose ball which Felicity batted straight into the corner to make the score 2-0. The Worksop keeper made some astonishing saves with an endless barrage of Witham attacks pounding the goal towards the final whistle but the girls couldn’t quite manage the third.  A good performance but still the need for more calling and clinical finishing.

Witham Hall 6

Bourne Grammar 0

After a fairly lethargic return to training after a long tour, the 1st VII girls returned to action against Bourne Grammar. Witham started strongly with Sopia Ktori causing havoc down the right hand flank. After sustained pressure Philippa Hix bundled home after strong work by Felicity Bridges Webb down the middle. Two quick goals followed with a well taken short corner routine by Felicity and close range shot by Isabella Manara. The second half needed a vocal response from Witham as they seemed flat despite being in the lead. Sophia Ktori smashed home a fourth with the help of a neat deflection from Isabella and then Poppy Chatterton, solid at the back as ever, set Philippa free who slipped the ball to the every ready Hattie Grace to slot into the corner. With minutes left on the clock the girls kept pushing with Catherine Swanston flying forward creating space for the wingers which enabled Felicity to finish the match off in style. Another clean sheet but the need for vocal support on the pitch is ever needed. Onto the Foremarke Tournament on Saturday.

2nd VII:

Witham Hall 5
Bourne Grammar  0

Witham 2nd team had a superb match against Bourne Grammar School. Every member of the team worked their socks off, meeting every ball, making space and working as a team. Anya Batty barely waited 2 minutes before scoring her first goal. With support from Lottie Bingham (c) and Maria Morris in midfield Anya was soon scoring her second supported by Jojo Chawner. Maria then smashed the ball onto the back board from a short corner.

Bourne Grammar came back stronger in the second half and looked more dangerous than before but Sophie Wass made a great save; Lydia Plant and Ella Turner worked hard in defence to clear the ball out and push up. Harriet Darley received the ball on the line, beat her player and sent the ball into the D assisting Anya in her 3rd goal of the match. Maria scored her second goal of the match to make the final score 5-0 with Witham pushing for a 6th in the final minutes of the game. The best performance so far from the 2nd team – well done all!

Witham Hall   2

Wellow House U12A  2

Witham Hall had a very competitive match against Wellow House away on the grass. Witham led the way in the first half with 2 fantastic goals. Harriet Darley scored the first goal after some lovely shots from Anya Batty and Maria Morris following up on rebounds, into the far post where Harriet slotted the ball past the keeper. Abbie Leverton was our next goal scorer in her debut in the 2nd VII with a ball crossed in this time from Jojo Chawner. Ella Turner and Lydia Plant did a superb job in defence clearing the ball out, meeting tackles and sending play wide.

In the second half Wellow came out all guns blazing with some big hitters; this put Witham on the back foot and despite Sophie Wass (c)making loads of fantastic saves, one slipped past her into the far corner. Harriet Darley kept trying her hardest, working up the wing with the ball but unfortunately the majority of play was being forced down the centre. Wellow had another shot saved by Sophie but unfortunately picked up the rebound to score a second goal. A well battled match with Witham coping well on unfamiliar undulating ground – well done!

Witham Hall  0

Bedford U12A  6

This was a game full of grit and determination right from the start, with both sides really up for it. There was a very strong battle in midfield, with either side not prepared to give away the ball easily. Maria Morris, Lottie Bingham and Harriet Darley worked tirelessly to try and get the ball through to Anya Batty. Despite Witham’s best efforts, they just couldn’t quite get that perfect final ball. Bedford had some particularly skilful individuals, who were just as comfortable on their reverse side as much as their strong side. After a battling away for some time, Bedford finally broke down the Witham defence and took the lead. At halftime it was 0-1 to Bedford and it was still all to play for. But despite the determination of all the Witham players and the super efforts of defenders Lydia Plant and Ella Turner, Bedford took a hold of the game and put more goals past the rather unfortunate Sophie Wass, who couldn’t have done anything about the excellent quality of the finishes. The final score was 0-6 to Bedford, but the girls should take heart that this was an ‘A’ team they were playing and that they gave 100% in this match. Despite the result it was an excellent effort by the girls who never gave up.

3rd VII:

Senior Superb  4
Bedford U12C  0

Team ‘Superb’ started off the match very brightly with Chica Maitland, Sienna Bowman & Piper Dallimore seeing a lot of ball and moving it well between themselves.  JoJo Chawner was lively upfront giving her teammates plenty of options. It wasn’t long before Witham opened the scoring with a fine effort from Chica Maitland. Witham continued their excellent link up play and Chica scored a second goal. Bedford began to find their feet and started to look threatening, but defenders Olivia Burnett and Leonie Fraser stood strong to defend the Witham goal. Witham’s dominance continued and they went on to score two more goals courtesy of excellent finishes by Abbie Leverton and JoJo Chawner. A superb result from team ‘Superb’, well done girls!

Senior Sensational  2

Bedford U12D  1
Anya Batty  2

Team Sensational played a tough U12 side from Bedford Girls.  Team Sensational involved Sophie Wass (GK), Sophia Howard, Mia Harcourt, Izzy Wass, Tilly Conant, Anya Batty, Harriet Darley, Chloe Howard and Andrea Arenos Santos.  The first third was tight and the girls played very well indeed.  Witham Hall’s passing was very strong and the channel runs were super.  Anya Batty scored a super quick goal just before the whistle.  In the second third, Witham were awarded a short corner, where Izzy Wass and Anya Batty certainly showed Bedford Girls’ how to take a short corner.  Two strikes and a goal was scored by Anya – brilliant.  Witham were 2-0 up heading into the final third round of play.  In the final third, Sophie Wass certainly kept us in the game with some outstanding goal kicks as GK, Sophia Howard, Tilly Conant, Andrea Arenos Santos and Mia Harcourt fought hard tackling and the mid and forward team, Chloe Howard and Harriet Darley, pushed the ball consistently into our D.  Unfortunately a quick break by Bedford just before the end of the match, led to them scoring a super goal.  Well done girls on a great game!  The final score was Witham 2, Bedford Girls’ 1.

Senior Superb  0

Bedford U12B  1

Team Superb had a hard task of playing two full games.  It was going to be tough, but they were up for it.  Team Superb involved Fraser Hakney (GK), Olivia Burnett, Chica Maitland, Sienna Bowman, Abbie Leverton, Piper Dallimore, Leonie Fraser and JoJo Chawner.  The first half was again tight and there was equal possession by both teams.  There was some excellent, strong tackling and marking by Leonie Fraser, who stole the show at the back line of defence.  Olivia Burnett, Chica Maitland, Sienna Bowman and Piper Dallimore displayed some excellent steals and passing through to the Witham attack, which gave us a few opportunities to score.  Up front there was JoJo Chawner, who consistently worked the ball from channel to channel and set up some lovely runs into the D, which was great.  The score at half time was 0-0.  The second half saw Abbie Leverton in action and again she dominated the right side of the pitch.  Witham were starting to get tired, after a long, tough two matches.  Tackling and ‘want’ for the ball was still there, but tired legs overtook!  Bedford Girls’ unfortunately made a quick run through the middle, 30 seconds before the end of the game, and scored a super close range goal.  Fraser could do nothing!  The full time whistle blew and Witham narrowly lost 0-1.

I am so proud of everyone in Team Superb! They displayed some outstanding hockey across both games and the standard of hockey played was simply ‘superb’!  Well done! And thank you to all our supporters who came to watch all the games.
