The Reception children visit Bourne Fire Station

25 Feb 2016

As part of our ‘People who help us’ topic the children in the Reception class were excited to be invited to visit Bourne Fire Station. A happy and very excited group of children climbed from the minibuses. We found out about the importance of having a smoke detector and how to check the batteries regularly. We talked about all the different ways the Fire Brigade help us – not only to put out fires.  We then broke in to 2 groups and each group were shown a different side of the fire engine. We then swapped over to continue our tour. We saw hoses, cutting gear, pumps breathing apparatus and the thermal imaging camera to name just a few things. We even had the chance to climb inside the fire engine to see where the crew sit on the way to a fire. After we had seen the long ladders everyone had a chance to use one of the small hoses to spray some water.  For many children a real highlight of the visit.

We are very grateful to the team of firefighters who gave up their time so willingly to help us learn about the job they do to help people.
