UKMT report – Tuesday 8th March 2016
09 Mar 2016
It was a great pleasure to take Eshan Mehta and Noah Cooper to the Regional stage of the UKMT team challenge. These two Year 8 boys are accomplished mathematicians; one recently sat the Oundle Preliminary scholarship papers and progressed to the final round in May, another is working hard at Level 3 Common Entrance 13+ with the aim of gaining successful entry to Eton College.
We were teamed up with a pair of Year 9 pupils from Uppingham to make a team of 4 and competed against 18 other schools (a total of 24 teams). Rounds consisted of cross number puzzles with questions being answered in pairs. The answer to one question was required to help answer the next question. A team relay required questions to be answered and then taken at speed to a desk where a teacher would indicate if the given answer was correct or not.
There were some challenging questions that required the teams to use their knowledge of maths to manipulate algebra and apply ratio to solve a multitude of maths problems.
The final result for ‘Team Witham/ Uppingham’ was 2ndplace - the best in the four years I have been taking the children to the competition. If we are ultimately the highest scoring regional runners up then we progress to the final in London!
It was well organised and both our boys represented Witham fantastically. I was very pleased with how focused they were through the day to compete against some strong opposition.
