U9A girls win at Bedford Modern Tournament

16 Mar 2016

After being stuck in traffic for half an hour the Witham U9 girls arrived with minutes to spare before their first match against Northampton High School. This was the first High 5 match the U9 team have played this year so it took a little while to get used to rotating positions and slightly different rules. Charlotte and Matilda both scored in the first half and NHS managed to get one in. Going into the second half Captain Millie really found her stride scoring 4, and Lilia also scored.

Our second match was against Bedford Modern A; they had some tall girls with nice passing skills and unfortunately a few mistakes from the Witham girls, loopy passes and wasted shots, meant that we only managed a 2-2 draw, despite beating BMS in a previous fixture.

Next up Witham faced Bedford Modern B team. All of the girls had had at least one go at shooting by this stage and had finally got used to the 8ft posts; Millie, Lilia, Mollie and Rose all scored multiple goals and the girls in defence and centre court managed to limit the amount of attacking play BMS had. The Witham team looked really slick and had some lovely movement up the court using different channels.

With just two matches to go and one draw on our score sheet we had to win the next two games to have a chance at the medals. Broughton Manor had previously beaten BMS A in the earlier rounds so this proved to be our toughest match yet. It was a close game but Witham’s attacking play was unstoppable with Matilda, Charlotte and Millie all scoring. The defence were tested in the second half with some very tall shooters and Broughton looked set to make a return but we managed another 5 point win.

The final match of the afternoon was against Akeley Wood. Once again Witham played very well; a wonder goal from Mollie at the edge of the circle was certainly the highlight of the match, if not the tournament! All of the girls played out of their skins on this hot afternoon with very little recovery time between matches. Mollie, Rose and Charlotte all scored goals and the defence didn’t let anything in.

Fantastically the U9 team collected the first place medals and didn’t lose a single game scoring 32 goals and conceding just 5! Every girl scored multiple goals and defended brilliantly all day – well done U9s!
