Colts A football tour 2016

21 Mar 2016

The annual Colts A football tour began with a Saturday afternoon Premier League match at the Hawthorns stadium, where we enjoyed watching visitors Norwich City ease their relegation worries with a gritty 1-0 win against West Bromwich Albion.

We continued our minibus journey west (inspecting a provincial McDonald's on the way) and eventually arrived at Malvern College's prep school, The Downs. After a relaxing evening of table tennis and pool, the boys settled down for the night in The Downs' boarding accommodation.

We awoke on Sunday morning to a delicious full English breakfast to help us prepare for our match against The Downs' U11 A team. The contest started evenly with both teams fully committed to their cause. Shortly before half-time, Sam – making his first outfield appearance of the season – poked the ball home after good work from Harry and Louis to give Witham a 1-0 lead at the break. The hosts pressed us hard after the break but our boys showed great resilience in the face of pressure. Sadly we couldn’t quite hold on for the victory as The Downs scored a deserved equaliser with just a few minutes remaining. Overall, this was a fair result to a keenly fought encounter that was played in the right spirit – well done to both teams.

We thank The Downs for their kind hospitality and a terrific football match, and well done to our boys for representing Witham so well with their immaculate behaviour.
