Eleven Witham athletes compete at National Schools’ Biathlon Championships

29 Mar 2016

The Modern Biathlon National Championships were held at Crystal Palace International Sports Centre with the girls competing on the Saturday and the boys on the Sunday. It was a very early start Saturday morning as we arrived for registration in London at 7:40am after a 4.45am alarm. Alice was our first competitor in the U12 girls 800m run followed by her 50m swim. Alice shaved time of her qualifying times, and moved her national ranking from 208th to 136th. Our U10 girls Gigi and Millie were next to compete; both of them doing incredibly well with Millie increasing her national ranking from 101st to 92nd and Gigi from 106th to 99th.

Witham’s U11 girls qualified for the team event as well as the individual event, coming 20th out of nearly 30 schools. Ffion was our top placed competitor of the whole competition with two personal bests, as well as increasing her national ranking from 62nd to 46th in the country. Matilda smashed her regional times, increasing her ranking from 256th to 146th! Josie also shaved a huge amount off her regional times and went from 189th to 140th. Ella was our final competitor of the day, having to wait until 4.30pm for her 1600m run; she did this in a school record breaking time of 6.04! Her 100m swim was just as impressive and she climbed from 120th to 75th nationally.

Sunday was all about the boys; once again it was an early start with Oliver, Finn and Ewan in the first races of the day with their 800m run. Oliver’s hard work paid off and he took a significant amount of time off both his run and swim taking him from 163rd in the country to 77th. Finn also did remarkably and went from 108th to just outside to top 50 in 54th. Ewan won his heat in the run and was just seconds off the school record at 2.32, his swim also improved hugely and he went from 117th to 60th. The boys also placed 7th in the team event! Our last boy to compete was Charlie who followed suit with an equally impressive set of results, going from 85th to 61st in the country.

These biathletes have been training at least 4 times a week in school, not to mention the hours of training they have done off their own backs at home. Their results speak for themselves – an outstanding effort all round! Many thanks must go to Miss Robinson for all of her help leading up to, and over the weekend; also thanks to the parents for all of their support and motivation from the side lines.
