Little Genius Quiz Champions!

Witham Four Fivers (Richard Tomlinson, Kit Chatterton, Isabella Beattie and Rose Brassey)

Witham Four Fives (Kit Parkinson, Eddie Howells, Sophie Marshall and Matilda Craven)

This exciting new competition for Year 5 pupils in the counties of Lincolnshire and Rutland was set up by Rutland Radio in partnership with Stamford Endowed Schools. The venue was the grand Oswald Hall at the Stamford Endowed School and there was a positive and vibrant atmosphere on arrival from both competitors and spectators. The quiz master was Rutland Radio’s breakfast DJ, Rob Persani. The children had 10 seconds to answer each question within a series of topics from Science and Technology to History and Maths. Electronic keypads allowed them to make their selection which was then recorded by a huge central computer. The top 20 schools’ scores were projected onto the giant screen to view the progress over the seven rounds of the 1st stage of the competition.

The top four teams at the end of the 1st stage of the competition were then given the chance to battle it out in a quick fire buzzer round on the podium to see who would be the winner of the inaugural Little Genius Quiz. Both Witham teams reached the final. It was nail biting stuff as the four teams were quick to press their buzzers but it was definitely neck and neck between the two Witham teams. The winners by only two points were the Witham Four Fivers (R Tomlinson, K Chatterton, R Brassey and I Beattie).

I was immensely proud of every Witham Year 5 pupil who represented the school, not only because of their success, but the way in which they competed so gracefully against each other but also for their support of each other – they were indeed one team of eight in my view which is indicative of the wonderful community values encouraged at Witham.

Following the success, both teams were given a short interview about the quiz and how much they enjoyed it by Rob Persani which was aired at 0755hrs on Thursday Friday 22nd April (the recording can be obtained from Rutland Radio). Moreover, as well as winning the coveted shield, a certificate each and a prize of a ‘Brain Box’ quiz game, all eight of our pupils have been invited to a tour of Rutland Radio during one morning in May to see how the radio station operates and have another opportunity to be interviewed live on the breakfast radio slot.

Last night’s achievement was no mean feat and the children were exemplary in every aspect, from their attire, manners, composure under pressure and above all they were terrific ambassadors for Witham Hall.

Well done to you all!

My thanks go to the parents who came along to support such a terrific event.
