Chess Players making all the right moves!
26 Apr 2016
It's been an exciting start to the new term for Chess players at Witham. Firstly, over the Easter holiday 10 boys played in the IAPS chess tournament held at Aldro School in Surrey. We were delighted to come home with several awards both on and off the chess board! Rori Rodell and Richard Tomlinson came first in their respective sections, and Sam Smith came 3rd in his. Robert Tombs became our first ever player to qualify for the Championship section, putting in a sterling performance. Will Robertson won the sportsmanship award, and on the football pitch we reached the semi-finals. Witham once again won the best kept and best behaved dormitory award. Another highlight of the 3 days away was once again the trip to CHESSington World of Adventure where the boys managed to ride every stomach churning ride at least once!
Shortly after our return from The IAPS tournament we played in the Under 13's Schools National Finals which was held at King’s School, Grantham. Our team of Robert Tombs, Rori Rodell, Ewan Rodell, and Richard Tomlinson faced their toughest matches yet, Robert playing both England’s board 1 and board 2 players - a very daunting prospect. Our boys really applied themselves and managed to finish as the leading Lincolnshire school. Last Sunday, Robert and Richard played for the Lincolnshire Under 18's County team - again a tremendous achievement for players so young.
This Saturday sees the next round of the Delancy National Schools Competition; the early rounds have been being played in school. We have several players attending both from Prep and Pre-Prep and we wish them the best of luck.
