Year 8 geography fieldtrip to the Olympic Park

12 May 2016

Following on from last term’s Year 7 visit, this week the Year 8 pupils had their chance to visit London to investigate the sustainability of the Olympic Park as part of their revision programme.

Led by John Widdowson (author of the ‘Geography for Common Entrance’ textbook), we discovered how the stadium and aquatics centre have been adapted for continued use, how the East Village apartments (formerly the athletes’ accommodation) have been designed with the environment in mind, and how the whole site is provided with electricity and hot water by burning biomass in a single combined energy centre.

Fieldwork techniques used by the children included sustainability assessments, land-use mapping and pedestrian surveys! An enjoyable and informative day was had by all.
