Witham Hall 1st IX Rounders to the RNCF National Rounders Finals Day

28 Jun 2016

After winning all of their matches in the subsequent rounds, our 1st IX Rounders qualified for the National Finals Day! We were one of only 4 schools to qualify for the day. Witham were certainly the smallest with just 22 girls to choose from across year 7 and 8; as opposed to Millfield, Bedford and Windlesham House who are all much bigger schools, with up 200 to choose from!

The semi-final match draw was drawn out of a hat, and rather unfortunately for us we drew Bedford. We batted first and managed to score a couple of half and full rounders from Jaz, Jojo, Sophie and Alice. However, our score of 4 ½ was dwarfed by Bedford who scored 30 rounders in one innings. Despite this the Witham girls played with great sportsmanship, never giving up, and quite honestly doing some of the best fielding I have seen from them. The fact that Bedford had a couple of batters who could pick any gap, made our job very difficult. This result put us into the 3rd 4th playoff.

After a wonderful BBQ lunch provided by St Edwards, we went back out to get warmed up for our match against Windlesham who had had a very close semi-final against Millfield. We won the toss and went into field first. The girls played brilliantly; a more confident, relaxed and united team completely. Windlesham had a couple of really strong batters, but some intelligent fielding from Witham meant that they were either put out, or limited in their scoring. Harriet, Jaz, Jojo and Issy all had fantastic catches; Jaz’s particularly impressing the England rounders umpire.

Sophie did an excellent job bowling, really confusing the opposition with her donkey drop bowling, and then hitting into gaps and batting well. She was awarded the prize for the Most Valuable Player in the Witham team - well done Sophie! Isabella wowed everyone with her batting and was awarded the prize for the most rounders scored – well done Isabella! Bedford, who won the Nationals two years previously with the same team, went on to win the final comfortably against Millfield. Our second innings only lasted about 6 balls before we had won the game and the match was called as the rain began. Issy humbly collected our 3rd place trophy and it will sit proudly in the cabinet. It has been a fantastic season and what a brilliant way to top off the term – well done to all of the rounders girls, 3rd place in the country!!
