Keen golfers have had opportunity to enjoy the Witham course three evenings a week under the guidance of Mr Paul Boswell. Dodging in and out of the rain they have also managed to make the most of some competitive matches.

Witham v Stoneygate:

Our first inter-school Golf match was a Stableford competition against Stoneygate. Both teams put their golfers into pairs, each player taking alternate shots. Our pairs consisted of Will Chandler and James Tattersall, Freddie Dumbill and Max Shippey, Sacha Howells and Robert Tombs and Callum Wass and Richard Tomlinson. Each of our pairs scored well and the final result was 2-2 in matches. However, when all of the points were added together, Stoneygate just clinched it and won by 80 Stableford points to 78! The evening was a very enjoyable event and all of the golfers showed a high level of golf etiquette as they played the course.

Witham v Maidwell:

The golf team played their second match of the season away at Maidwell Hall on Sunday 15th May. Our team consisted of Will Chandler as captain, James Tattersall, Max Shippey, Freddie Dumbill, Callum Wass, Orlando Thain and Noah Cooper. Once again, each of our players gave of their best and a happy afternoon of golf was had by all. This fixture was a team scratch competition in which every stroke counted. Witham finished as overall winners, finishing 8 strokes better than Maidwell.

Will Chandler at the ISGA Wellington Salver

On Sunday 8th May Will Chandler, our Captain of Golf, played in the ISGA Wellington Salver, held at the immaculate but tight 9-hole course at Wellington College. It was a hot day and to keep the concentration going for up to five hours on such narrow fairways was a real challenge for all of the players. Will finished 12th out of 36 players in the gross medal and 2nd in the net medal for his age group. This was an outstanding achievement for Will.

Witham v Toft:

The golf team played their final fixture of the season on Monday 20th June. Playing against Toft Golf Club, our team comprised of those who have attended Mr Game’s lessons during this term. The evening proved to be a happy and enjoyable event and finished with us achieving a 2½ to 1½ win. Sophie Marshall and Matilda McKay played exceptionally well, managing to halve their match. One of the highlights of the evening was the way in which Eleanor Tickler and Maddie Bryars persevered and improved their standard of play as their round progressed.

Five tennis squads practice every week at Witham and many children enjoy the tennis coaching programme offered over four evenings with five different coaches. Over the term there have been some entertaining and competitive matches against other schools and some keenly fought inter house events.

U11 Boys and Girls vs Stamford Junior School

Girls:  Witham 4 sets Stamford 0

Boys: Witham 4 sets Stamford 4

The girls’ team had an impressive win over the Stamford girls. Bonnie Harris and Ella Chandler did not drop a game playing together extremely well. The very young pairing of Bella Fox and Lillia Dunn showed great maturity against much older girls only dropping a few games.

The younger boys pairing of Oscar Hanson and Henry Farmer played some superb tennis winning both of their sets impressively. The older boys were fairly evenly matched with Oli Allport and Alex Spragg and Felix Starkey and James Fairfax winning and losing a set while George Weaving and Max St John narrowly lost both of theirs.

This was a very nice match played in excellent spirit and with great sportsmanship.

U13, U12 and U11 Boys Tennis vs Worksop Prep

The Witham Team Tennis squad travelled to Worksop Prep for their first fixture of the season in cold conditions. With teams of two pairs for U13, U12 and U11, the boys were keen to start well. Every match was extremely competitive with Witham doing themselves proud with the way they conducted themselves on the court. Max and Oscar started to play some impressive tennis once they relaxed into it with the U12 pairings of Sacha & Archie and Robert & Finn fighting for points throughout. Joe and Charlie were extremely impressive for a pairing of such inexperience and they really were a pleasure to watch. Overall, Archie & Olly alongside Max & Alex did tremendously well and won their group playing some impressive tennis. The most pleasing thing, highlighted by these two pairs but shown throughout from the Witham team, was the teamwork shown on court. Well done to each pair on a great afternoon of tennis!
