Year 5 Geography visit to Grange Farm
17 Oct 2016
On Thursday our Year 5 pupils enjoyed a fantastic morning at Grange Farm, Dunsby.
The visit began with an introduction to arable farming. We handled a range of crops before going out to a field to see wheat being established and satellite-tracked tractors in action. We also learned about soils, irrigation and drainage.
After that we went to the neighbouring dairy farm where we viewed the cows’ housing and the milking parlour, watched the head herdsman trimming some hooves, and saw some four-hour-old calves!
We then viewed a private collection of vintage agricultural machinery – quite a contrast to the giant modern tractors and combine harvesters of today!
We thank Mr and Mrs Atkinson for their generosity in organising the morning and looking after everybody so well!
