Under 11A Hockey Update

Under11A v Bedford Girls School, Lost 0-5

Witham welcomed three Bedford teams for a block fixture this Saturday. We knew Bedford would be strong with many more girls to select from. Witham gave Bedford a good match but Witham struggled to get past Bedford’s defence. Bedford’s speed on the ball, ball pace and power were all superior to the Witham girls, resulting in a 5-0 defeat. However, the Witham girls battled hard and showed good potential, with Charlotte Bingham and Bella Fox playing particularly well. A lot to work on over the coming weeks, but the coach is positive that the team will improve greatly as term progresses.

Under11A v St John’s Cambridge, Won 3-1

The Under11A hockey girls had, up until this point, not managed to score a goal in inter-school fixtures yet this term! However, the team finally had some fire in their bellies, a couple of decent training sessions under their belts, and the desire to hear the ball hitting the back board!

Witham were the first team to score thanks to a lovely goal worked by Bella, Lilia and Poppy, executing some wonderful team work. Matilda had a series of outstanding saves in goal, wowing the crowd and her team mates. Unfortunately in the last 5 minutes of the first half, our tired legs resulted in a couple of silly mistakes and St John’s scored a goal.

It was one all at half time and still all to play for. Thankfully some lovely passing up the field, and great speed down the right resulted in Lilia getting the final touch on two more goals for Witham. It was a great game, with the Under11A girls finally beginning to gel together.

Under11A to Oakham Tournament

v Wellingborough  Lost 1-0
v Spratton Hall Won 3-0
v Oakham Won 5-0
v Old Buckenham Hall Won 4-0

The Under11A girls headed over to Oakham for their annual tournament. We started really slowly in the first match against Wellingborough, and unfortunately by the time we started to link some nice passes together and play the standard of hockey the Under 11 girls are capable of, it was too late. Matilda C made a great save, but some sleepy defence left her open for the second shot. We lost 1-0, sealing our fate for the rest of the tournament; as Wellingborough went on to win all of their other matches.

We got an early goal against Spratton which really got the girls going; Bella scored two superb goals, with Josie slicing one into the bottom corner just minutes after. The goals were all the product of brilliant team work and determination. Spratton had some skilful players but Charlotte, Maddie and Millie all tackled hard and didn’t let Spratton into the D.

The next game was equally impressive against Oakham. Straight away Witham were on the attack, once again the first goal came from a string of passes and hassling in the D, with Lilia getting the final touch. Bella was next on the score card, wowing the crowds and Oakham umpires. Rose moved out of defence to left midfield and impressed us all with her nifty skills, beating defenders to find the backboard twice. Josie’s hard work up and down the pitch payed off and she scored the final goal of the match.

The final match of the tournament was against Old Buckenham Hall who looked to have some talented players. This did not deter Witham though and Bella was straight into the D scoring her 4th goal of the day! Matilda M had a little more to do in this match with what could have been a breakaway goal coming her way, but she kept calm and cleared the ball. Lilia scored a wonderful goal on the rebound, with Poppy popping two more goals in before the final whistle!

The girls all played out of their skins, following instruction well and working for each other. For the 2nd year in a row Bella was awarded the ‘Future Star’ trophy by Oakham for her outstanding play – well done Bella and all of the Under11 girls.
