Under 11B Hockey Update
20 Oct 2016
Under 11B v Bedford Girls School, Lost 0-1
The first home game for the Under 11B’s saw Bedford Girl’s School visit Witham. This was a game in which the level of skill from both team’s improved greatly as the match progressed. Both team’s started by chasing the ball around the pitch and were unable to create many chances for the first few minutes. As time went on the Witham girl’s distribution of the ball became more accurate enabling them to use the whole pitch more effectively. Bedford managed to score a goal from an attack just before half time giving them the edge. After the break Witham showed great determination and began to create many chances but unfortunately the opposition goal keeper had an excellent match and thwarted the Witham attack on numerous occasions ensuring Bedford kept their lead until the final whistle.
U11B Hockey v Wellow, Drew 0 - 0
The first match of the season saw a year six team travel to Wellow to play their Under 11 A team. Both teams started enthusiastically and spent a lot of time chasing the ball rather than keeping to their positions. The bumpy nature of the grass pitch meant that the ball was hard to control when dribbling and once the Witham girls realised it was quicker to distribute the ball with a hit they were able to send the ball into the oppositions circle. Witham had a number of shots on target which the Wellow goalkeeper was able to deal with effectively. The standard of play from both teams improved markedly as the game progressed and in particular the girl’s movement into space and accuracy of passing. This was a pleasing start to the season and gives the team a good base to work from.
Under 11B v St John’s Cambridge, Drew 0-0
The Under 11B Hockey team worked hard against a strong St John’s team. Witham had a good deal of possession and a number of penalty corners awarded to them but unfortunately the girls were unable to convert any attacking plays. St John’s defended superbly in their ‘D’ ensuring that the ball stayed out of their goal. Credit must also be given to our defence who broke down any attempts that our opponents made to score. The girls in midfield worked hard linking with their forwards and getting back to defend when possession was lost. A great effort girls.
Under 11B v Gresham’s, Won 1-0
The Under 11B girls travelled to King’s Lynn to play Gresham’s on the superb new Pelican’s pitch. Both teams started by playing the match in the middle of the pitch resulting in a very scrappy game. Eventually the Witham girl’s distributed the ball more effectively and were able to pass the ball into the D. Witham had the majority of the play throughout the first half but were unable to capitalise on the pressure. In the second half again Witham were dominant and eventually managed to score. The Gresham’s goal keeper was their best player and restricted Witham to the single winning goal. This was a good team effort but Witham need to work on their finishing to turn their hard work and pressure into goals.
