Under 10 Hockey Update
20 Oct 2016
Under 10 v Wellow House U11B, Won 3-2
Team: Captain - Bunny Bingham, Isabelle Blythe, Mollie Deaton, Rosie Johnson, Rachel Leckey, Izzie Leverton, Shivali Patel, Charlotte Welch
The Under 10 Hockey team travelled away to Wellow House to play their Under 11B team. It was a very warm day and the girls certainly needed a good warm up after a long, hot journey. We played on grass pitches, which we had to adapt to very quickly in the warm up. The first quarter took a little time to settle, but both teams worked hard and started to find their feet. Wellow House were used to the grass and were hitting more consistently than Witham. Just before quarter time, Witham took their foot off the gas and Wellow broke through and scored a good goal. Quarter time; 1-0 to Wellow! After a ‘tackling’ themed team talk, the girls went on in the second quarter with a clear plan of attack….hit hard and tackle quicker. The first five minutes Witham had all the possession but simply couldn’t score. The girls were tackling harder and were fighting hard. Unfortunately, Wellow House’s Centre Midfield intercepted a crossed ball and drove through to the goal and scored again. Witham went into half time 2-0 down. Mrs Welch knew what Witham had to do and pointedly made a ‘quick fire plan of attack’! The third quarter was tight and both teams battling hard in the heat. Witham had a sheer determination to tackle hard and work the ball through to the attack. They did and it created so many shooting opportunities. Bunny Bingham was the first to score Witham’s first goal after three minutes, followed by another just before the end of three quarter time. The game was there for our taking…Witham were on their comeback! The final quarter was tight and the girls were fighting hard to win the game. Shivali Patel battled so hard and her tackling was non-stop to win the ball for her team. She made one final tackle, won the ball, crossed it to Mollie Deaton who struck the ball and followed up by Charlotte Welch. A joint goal shared for Mollie and Charlotte and a lead for Witham. The final whistle went and the final score was Witham 3, Wellow 2. A fantastic first match for the girls and a wonderful ‘team effort’ by all. Well done to all the girls and thank you to all our side line parents/ grandparent supporting team, helping support the girls throughout.
Under 10 v Bedford Girls School U10, Lost 2-4
The Witham Under 10 team were certainly eager to get off to a strong start against a very powerful Bedford side. With skilful players across the pitch, Bedford stormed forward in attack but the Witham defence continued to battle hard with Shivali and Rachel standing firm to block each one. After ten minutes, the Witham defence was split and after a few fine saves from Isabelle, Bedford went into the half time break three goals up. The girls started the second half fighting, and with more belief. With Millie and Charlotte charging forward, the pressure soon told and Izzie slotted the ball into the corner to really fire the team up. It was soon two when Bunny smacked the ball home after fine work from Mollie in the midfield and the girls were certainly firing on all cylinders. Unfortunately time was the enemy but I am confident if we had another half, the girls would have pushed Bedford all the way for the result. A superb second half performance girls and one you should be extremely proud of!
Under 10 v St John’s, Cambridge U11C, won 10-0
Goal scorers: (Mollie Deaton x 2, Izzie Leverton x 2, Bunny Bingham x1, Shivali Patel x2, Rachel Leckey x1, Charlotte Welch x 2)
Team: Captain – Izzie Leverton, Mollie Deaton, Tilly Golland, Rosie Johnson GK, Rachel Leckey, Bunny Bingham, Shivali Patel, Charlotte Welch
The Under 10 ‘Welch Dream Team’ played an exciting match against St John’s, Cambridge. Witham warmed up and looked ready to perform in their first home game of the season. Rosie Johnson was making her debut at Goalkeeper and everything was looking good. After running through set pieces, every girl knew what they had to do. The first third of ten minutes was a pleasure to watch, the girls passed the ball with skill and accuracy and the defending was superb. Strong tackles made by Tilly Golland and Shivali Patel meant that keeper; Rosie Johnson had very little to do. The score at the break was 4-0 to Witham (scorers: Mollie Deaton, Izzie Leverton, Bunny Bingham and Charlotte Welch). The second third was again tight and quick goals came from Shivali Patel, Mollie Deaton and Rachel Leckey. The channel play was tight throughout and the flow of the game was impressive. Witham really fought hard in the tackle and had possession throughout. At the second break, Witham were leading 7-0. The final third saw the team go from strength to strength, Witham were really gelling together and the ‘Dream Team’ were in control. There were three more goals scored by Charlotte Welch, Izzie Leverton and Shivali Patel to bring home a 10-0 win to Witham.
The ‘Welch Dream Team’ have really worked hard in training and have listened to everything they have been told. I am very proud of what the girls produced in this match and the way they conduct themselves throughout. Well done girls – a fantastic match! Thank you to all our parents and supporters who came to watch the team in action.
Under 10 v Maidwell, won 4-1
All of the hard work the girls have put in during practice came to fruition on Saturday when the team beat Maidwell by three goals. The whole team played extremely well for the majority of the game. They distributed the ball well, held their positions on the pitch and were decisive in front of goal. Isabella Beattie in goal had a good game saving a number of strong shots from the opposition and cleared the ball effectively. The defence was positive and was able to relieve pressure with strong clearances. In attack all of the players showed commitment and energy and scored four excellent goals, a very pleasing all round performance.
Under 10 v Oakham Under 11, Won 3-0
Goal scorers: Bunny Bingham, Charlotte Welch, Matilda Halford
Team: Isabelle Blythe, Izzie Leverton, Matilda Halford, Mollie Deaton, Tilly Golland, Rosie Johnson GK, Rachel Leckey, Bunny Bingham, Shivali Patel, Charlotte Welch
The Under 10 ‘Welch Dream Team’ played a fantastic match against Oakham Under 11 team. The girls started off steady, with possession straight away. The channel runs and the passing were superb and all the team were playing very well indeed. The most improved area, since the last game was their positional play. After 8 minutes, Shivali Patel stole the ball in defence and drove the ball all the way to Bunny Bingham who shot brilliantly at goal. Witham were up 1-0 after one quarter. There were changes at quarter time and after a positive team talk, with direction, the girls ran back on the pitch, ready for more play. The second quarter was dominated by Witham Hall. The girls tackled hard and were really eager to ‘win’ the ball. Their pressure on the player and ball was superb. Again, tight defending and fantastic goalkeeping by Rosie Johnson, enabled the ball to be pushed up to our attack. Charlotte Welch took the ball onto the right, for a late dash at goal and drove to the ‘D’ with a strong strike from just inside. It went into the far corner, which gave Witham a comfortable half time score of 2-0. The second half (3rd and 4th quarters) were tough, as Oakham came back with a fight. Matilda Halford, Izzie Leverton, Mollie Deaton and Isabelle Blythe were strong in the mid player roles and closed down players quickly and our defenders; Tilly Golland, Rachel Leckey and Shivali Patel were outstanding. The highlight of the second half was Matilda Halford’s magnificent strike for goal after gaining possession at the defensive end. She struck the ball so confidently and accurately, which gave Witham a 3-0 lead. The match finished 3-0 and Mrs Welch was a happy coach! Well done to all the girls – they have trained so hard and have really put practice into match play – the team is blossoming, which bodes well for after half term games. Thank you to all the girls for a brilliant half term of hockey and thank you to all our wonderful supporters who have supported ‘The Under 10 Dream Team’ throughout.
