Under 11 and Under 10 Girls Hockey Update

21 Nov 2016

Under 11A v Grace Dieu  Won 6 - 0

Witham Hall travelled to Grace Dieu for their first game on grass this year. With very little time to warm up the girls started a little wobbly. It is a very different game on grass, requiring our girls to adapt. In the first third we had several opportunities and won a couple of short corners, but we only managed to convert one of these chances into a goal, finished off by Poppy.

In the second third our girls looked much more dangerous, with the ball not even entering our defensive half; much to the disappointment of Matilda in goal! Bella had a cracking 10 minutes of play, hammering the ball onto the backboard twice from short corners. Lilia played very nicely down the right and Poppy hassled hard in the D.

In the final third Grace Deiu had a couple more chances, but only made it into the D once, before quickly being shut down by Charlotte in defence. Within the first few minutes of the final third Bella had scored two more goals, so she came off for a rest. Poppy and Lilia finished off the game nicely with a lovely cross to the far post where Lilia was, ready to score the final goal of the match.

The Witham girls adapted really well to the grass and proved themselves to be very skilful and able hockey players. Poppy was voted player of the match by Grace Dieu.

Under 11A/B v St Hugh’s U11A Won 3-0

Witham arrived at St Hugh’s in the miserable rain, but this didn’t dampen the team’s spirits with The A/B team running straight onto the pitch for a very quick warm up before push back. Witham quickly gained possession and maintained it for the majority of the game. Poppy worked her socks off in centre midfield, resulting in 2 goals. Matilda was in some great positions and managed to find the backboard as well. Daisy also found some great positions down the left and worked incredibly hard. Bunny kept her sheet clean in goal with a cracking save, and the whole team really did pull together. Well done girls, you were fantastic ambassadors for the school both on and off the pitch.

Under 11A v Laxton Junior School Lost 1-0

The Witham U11A girls had seen Laxton place 2nd in their own tournament right at the beginning of the season, whilst we finished 2nd from bottom… So we were out to show Laxton just how much we have improved! The girls had the majority of the possession and territory certainly for the first half, but Laxton had two very strong players who cut out a great deal of our attacking play and free hits. Despite several opportunities, Witham didn’t manage to score. Laxton took their one chance of the first half and scored. In the second half Mollie dominated from the goal, saving the first shot at waist height, then the three subsequent rebound shots as well! It was a disappointing result, but it was a far from disappointing performance from the Witham team, well done on the massive improvements you have made this term girls.

Under 11B v Old Buckenham Hall Won 5 – 0

The Witham girls put on an impressive performance against the long distance travelling Old Buckenham Hall team. Witham dominated from the start and quickly scored. All of the girls worked hard and skilfully passing the ball around the pitch  putting all of the work in training into practice and created many opportunities to score. Matilda Halford converted three chances to score a satisfying hat trick. As the Witham team were so dominant and quickly achieved a five goal lead it was decided to mix up all of the girls in order to have a more even game. The whole team played the second half in a great spirit and a much better game ensued.

Under 10 v St Hugh’s  Won 1-0

This was one of the first games on St Hugh’s new astro in very dull wet conditions. The Witham team had the majority of the play throughout the game but were unable to hit the target and when they did the St Hugh’s’ goal keeper made some excellent saves. Rosie Johnson and Rachel Leckey had particularly good games both working very hard in unfamiliar positions. The goal was scored by Charlotte Welch who came up from defence to fire a strong shot into the goal. Shivali Patel gained in confidence and made some very good tackles to turn defence into attack. This was a very good all round performance by the whole team.

Under 10 v Laxton Junior School U11C Won 5-2

Goal Scorers: Rosie Johnson x2, Izzie Leverton x2, Bunny x1)

Team:  Captain – Bunny Bingham, Tilly Golland, Rosie Johnson, Rachel Leckey GK, Izzie Leverton, Shivali Patel, Isabelle Blythe

The Under 10 Hockey side travelled to Oundle to play their Under 11C hockey side.  With a new goalkeeper in place; Rachel Leckey, the team were ready to support her and play their very best.  We played three periods of ten minutes and the girls certainly got going from the start.  There was some excellent passing through the channels by Bunny Bingham, Isabelle Blythe, Rosie Johnson and Izzie Leverton and Rosie Johnson started the ball rolling with an early goal, sweeping the ball into the goal near the post.  Laxton fought hard straight away, which put our defensive team of Shivali Patel, Tilly Golland and goalkeeper Rachel Leckey under pressure.  With some excellent tackling, the ball was soon in our possession again.  Just before the end of the third, Izzie Leverton zoomed up the middle and popped another goal in to bring the score at the end of the first period to Witham 2, Laxton 0.

The second period was tight; Laxton came back at Witham and certainly improved their passing and their defensive play.  They had a few shots at goal, which Rachel Leckey saved, but unfortunately their first goal was a deflection off one of our players sticks, which made the score 2-1 to Witham.  Witham came back instantly, with Bunny Bingham making a dynamic drive up the middle channel, through to the ‘D’ and scored a fantastic goal.  Things were looking good with a 3-1 score line before the end of the second period.

The final third brought the best out of Laxton and Witham players.  Witham started to really find the wing players and the channel play was superb.  Laxton tackled hard and had a break of play, which resulted in a further goal, which gave them confidence.  The score was 3-2, to Witham with 6 minutes to go.  Rosie Johnson made a dynamic move to the post again and there was an accurate hard cross from Isabelle Blythe, which was swept into the back of the net by Rosie.  Within minutes, the same happened again, with Izzie Leverton this time driving the ball into the goal.  A great game of hockey overall, probably our most consistent game so far in the season.  Well done to all the players and thank you to all our supporters who came to watch the Under 10 ‘super’ team!
