West Midlands and East Midlands Regional Biathlon Championships

22 Nov 2016

On Sunday 9th October, 8 Witham pupils ranging from Year 4 boys to Year 8 girls, travelled to Solihull to compete in the Regional Biathlon Championships.

The children completed the swim component first, and nerves built as this is traditionally a weaker area for our athletes. However, all of the Witham children did us proud showing good technique and great sportsmanship.

Out on the track Witham really wowed, with super runs across the board. Our youngest competitor did particularly well considering he was racing against boys almost a year older than him – well done Angus.

The following Sunday 6 more Witham competitors were representing the school at the East Midlands Regional Biathlon Championships. These Witham athletes were slightly more inexperienced, with just 1 of the team competing in a Biathlon before. The all did immensely well, particularly on the track with 2 of our runners coming first in their age groups!

This time the swim was the second component after lunch, the children were anxious but they all did fantastically, showing real improvement. The East Midlands Championships was a smaller competition so it was slightly harder to gage what the results would mean nationally, but on the day Witham took home two 1st place medals – well done Matilda and Jack!!

Fantastically 3 of our athletes have qualified for the British Modern Biathlon Championships: Ffion Trundell, Jack Braddock and Millie Atkinson. There will be a chance for more of our Biathletes to qualify for the British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships in March. Many thanks to both Miss Robinson and Mr Callun for their support at the events, and of course to the parents for giving up their Sunday and making both Biathlons very special with a wonderful atmosphere. Wishing the best of luck to our 3 qualifiers who will compete in the nationals on 26th/27th November in Solihull
