2nd VII v Wisbech GS U12A won 4-1

After losing the previous 2 matches the girls were determined to finish the season on a high. Very quickly the team set up an attacking move and were reward with an early goal. Confidence began to show in our performance and the girls put into practice great stick work that had been practised in training. Our opponents worked hard to keep us at bay but our mid field and centre forward maintained their pressure and another goal was scored. Wisbech had their chances too and with some casual attempts to tackle and clear the ball out of the circle, our opponents were able to take advantage of some carelessness and score. Witham kept their composure and set up numerous attacking drives into our opponents circle winning a handful of short corners. With an excellent ejection to the top of the circle and a powerful strike another goal was score. Remembering the phrase ‘ let the ball do the work’ the girls did exactly that between the midfield players and centre forward culminating in the final goal of the match. The final score 4 – 1, a super end to a very enjoyable season.  It has been a pleasure coaching you all and you should be very proud of the progress you have made.

Under 11A/B v Maidwell Hall U11A  Won 6-1

Witham faced Maidwell Hall at home this Wednesday, in a gripping game not reflected by the score line. Maidwell played some lovely hockey and equalised the score to 1-1 in the first 5 minutes. Bella didn’t mess around scoring her second goal of the match to take Witham into the lead again though. Poppy put two goals away, with Josie and Rose also getting their names onto the score sheet. Once again the U11 girls played some lovely hockey, showing just how far they have come this term. Well done girls.

Under 10 at Leicester GS Tournament

The Under 10 team travelled to Leicester Grammar School to play in their annual tournament. Witham had a great start with a convincing 4-0 win over Brooke priory. This set the standard for the rest of the day with easy wins in the round robin stages enabled them to qualify for the final. This was against Fairfield and once again Witham dominated although it was a tougher match than any of the others, resulting in a 2-0 win.  The whole team played extremely well , Charlotte Welch was solid in defence, Rose Allport swept up any loose play, Millie Atkinson dominated the mid field and distributed the ball well,Lilia Dunn scored some tremendous goals and kept to her channel brilliantly, Bunnie Bingham worked tirelessly to win the ball, Matilda Halford  worked her socks off up front and Mollie Deaton played very well both in goal and on the pitch. Millie Atkinson deservedly won the player of the tournament but all the girl’s should be proud of their performance.

Under 10 Triangular

v Stamford JS U11B  Draw 1-1 (goal scorer Sophie Marshall)

Team :  Tilly Golland GK, Shivali Patel, Isabelle Blythe, Rosie Johnson, Rachel Leckey, Izzie Leverton, Eleanor Tickler, Sophie Marshall

The Under 10 side had a hard afternoon of hockey playing two Under 11 B teams.  They weren’t fazed by the teams and gave it their all.  The first game was against a very tall Stamford Under 11 team.  They could hit hard and tackle hard.  The girls played some lovely hockey from start to finish and passed the ball with belief and determination.  Our defensive line; Tilly Golland GK, Rachel Leckey and Shivali Patel battled hard to keep the ball out of the D, which they did well and they cleared the ball out wide.  Stamford took an early goal, just before half time, which certainly gave the team something to think.  The second half the mid players and the forwards all battled hard.  Isabelle Blythe and Izzie Leverton were attacking the D with belief and the mid players; Rosie Johnson, Sophie Marshall and Eleanor Tickler passed accurately in the channels, which gave our team belief.  With thirty seconds to go, Sophie Marshall intercepted a pass and drove the ball towards Stamford’s D and hit the ball right into the back of the net.  What a way to finish the game!  Witham deserved a goal and they worked so hard in the second half.  They played as a team and the quality of play was superb to watch.  Well done, a draw 1-1 was a fair result.

v  Leicester G S U11B  Lost 2-1 (goal scorer Matilda McKay)

Team :  Tilly Golland GK, Shivali Patel, Isabelle Blythe, Rosie Johnson, Rachel Leckey, Izzie Leverton, Matilda McKay, Gigi Granger

The Under 10’s second game was against Leicester GS U11B.  Again, they were a very strong side and they had beaten Stamford earlier. Witham knew it was going to be tough, but they battled hard. The first half was tight, with possession equal. Leicester tackled hard and both sides were fighting to score the first goal.  Tilly Golland in goal, saved three shots at goal, which was super.  Unfortunately, Leicester made a quick break, after losing the ball in our half and beat all the defence to score a good goal, just before half time.  After a quick team talk, Witham were back on the pitch.  Defensively, Rosie Johnson, Rachel Leckey and Tilly Golland knew what they had to do and tackle hard.  Our mid players became more confident to attack the D, with Gigi Granger and Shivali Patel passing with strength.  Our forward team; Matilda McKay and Izzie Leverton had some good opportunities and it was starting to look like Witham could score. Unfortunately, we lost the ball in our attack and Leicester made another good run up to our defence.  They shot at goal, just inside the D and scored.  Witham were down 0-2.  They had to battle hard, with 3 minutes to go.  In the last minute, Matilda McKay had a break, she tackled her opponent, gained possession, dribbled the ball up to Leicester’s goal and scored a brilliant goal.  Unfortunately it was full time and Witham had run out of time.  We lost 1-2, but battled very hard against a very tough team.  It was great experience to play against Under 11B teams and will make us stronger, ready for next year.  Well done to all the players and thank you to all our supporters.
