Senior Netball Update

1st VII Netball Team

1st VII v Oundle U12A

WHS – 12
Oundle - 2

Witham started off extremely well, working the ball round, waiting for the gaps to open and they began to really build confidence through to shooters Kate and Harriet. Defensively, Witham stopped the majority of balls heading into the goal circle, with Sophie and Bonnie, really stealing the show.  Mid court players; Lottie, Alice and Jasmine worked the ball up through the channels and the first time ball was brought through every time.  This was a good start to the Inter School Witham netball season.

1st VII v Oundle U13A

WHS – 9
Oundle - 3

With a fresh combination on and playing a taller team, Witham had to adapt their style of play. Ella and Georgia soon got into their positions and really started to step things up. In the shooting circle, Harriet started to work the ball in calmly, giving confidence to the team.  Alice and Jasmine worked the ball from centre pass nicely, showing good channel movement up to the circle edge.  Georgia and Sophie’s man to man defence was exceptional and again Oundle found it very difficult to find the gaps into Witham’s goal circle. Lottie marked the WA out of the game, which won the ball for Witham on most of their centre passes.  It was a confident finish to the match and a good afternoon throughout; thank you to all of our supporters who travelled over to Oundle to watch the team.

1st VII v Worksop College

WHS – 38
WC – 2

The 1st team travelled to Worksop College to play their U13A side. After a long journey, the girls were hit by the cold weather and had to do a thorough warm up, ready for their match! Witham were dominant throughout the first quarter and the shooters certainly had a lot of practice. Witham were up 12-0 by the start of the second quarter. With a change of combination, it was nice to see players adapting to new positions and working together as a team to work the ball from defence through to attack. Worksop College could not break the tight man to man marking, which certainly rattled some of their players and Worksop only scored one goal in the second quarter. Witham went on to score a further 11 goals, bringing the half time score to 23-1. Again, after a few more changes, Witham now needed to use this game to try out some new moves and also adapting to new players in new roles. Witham consistently moved the ball through to the shooters and the final score was 38-2. This was a game where players had to manage the ‘mental’ side of sport and I am pleased and proud of how the team worked together to manage their hurdles.

2nd VII Netball Team

2nd VII v St Hugh’s U13A

WHS - 12
SH - 13

This was a closely fought match that was at times played at a very fast pace. The Witham U13B team were mostly shorter than their opponents; however, they didn’t let that deter them and their teamwork and support of each other throughout this game was spot on. The first quarter was very even, finishing with four goals apiece and Sienna leading the way on the scoring front. In the second quarter there were a few silly mistakes and a little too much playing down one channel leading to some interceptions so the girls then found themselves two goals behind for a couple of quarters. In the final quarter St Hugh’s upped the pace which led to them making more mistakes and the Witham team suddenly saw a way back into the match and quickly swept in the lead and some good goals being scored by Zara. However, with minutes to go St Hugh’s equalised and then a couple of silly mistakes from Witham led to St Hugh’s scoring the winning goal in the dying seconds. Katie put in the strongest performance at centre and really held the team together – her work rate was outstanding. However, this was a fantastic team effort with inspiring team spirit, athleticism and some good skills on show from everyone. Well done – a great result against another school’s A team.

2nd VII v Oundle

WHS – 10
Oundle – 5

The Under 13 girl’s travelled to Oundle on Wednesday. Both teams started slowly but the Witham shooters were more consistent and took a three goal lead into the first break. The Witham defence was very solid making it difficult for the Oundle attack to keep possession of the ball. It wasn’t until the third quarter that Oundle managed to score a goal but Witham kept up the pressure and ran out easy winners. The whole team played extremely well for the first game of the season the only disappointing aspect was the injury to Lulie.

2nd/3rd VII v Worksop College U12A

WHS – 10
WC - 12

The Under 13’s travelled to Worksop to play an Under 12A team on Wednesday. Witham made a very slow start against strong opposition scoring only a single goal in the first quarter in comparison to Worksop’s seven. As the game progressed Witham got into their stride and limited Worksop to a single goal whilst scoring one themselves in the second quarter. After half time and a team reshuffle Witham played much more positively and put the pressure on Worksop managing to draw within one goal, but unfortunately Witham were unable to press home the advantage losing by two goals. This was a very good performance in the later stages of the game against a strong team.
