Boys Hockey Update
10 Feb 2017
Spratton Hall 2 Witham Hall 1
For many of the boys this was their first experience of eleven a-side hockey and it really was a fine effort. Witham pressed hard and worked tirelessly despite conceding early. After a fine goal by captain Olly, the game stayed all square in a tense but entertaining finale until in the last minute, Spratton scored an impressive individual goal to snatch victory away from the Witham boys – one that was hard to take but a fair reflection on the quality of the Spratton team. This was a superb team performance to begin the season with however.
Maidwell Hall 5 Witham Hall 2
After taking an early lead, Witham really were blown away by the physical power of the Maidwell side who had a set of individuals who could all hit, dribble and tackle hard. The pace of the opposition attacks were hard to stifle and despite some brilliant saves from Robert, the match finished in a comfortable win for Maidwell.
St Hugh’s 2 Witham Hall 1st/2nd 1
The mixed team from Witham immediately took the lead and were seemingly looking comfortable until time progressed without the infamous second goal to kill the game off. The longer the match went on, the more the boys started to look nervous and after St Hugh’s equalised, the crowd and the occasion certainly got to the boys. With two minutes left on the clock, St Hugh’s scored the winner after Witham failed to clear the short corner. This was certainly a lesson learned for the boys who needed to show a big performance in their next match to get the season back on track.
TDA 0 Witham Hall 1
Against an Under 14 team, Witham battled hard throughout to finish victorious after a fine goal scored by Olly – set up neatly by Harry and Ewan. This certainly was an experience for the team playing against boys who were far bigger and stronger.
IN2 County Hockey Tournament
With a recent win under their belts, the team really were fired up to continue in the same vein. A match against Stamford first up was not ideal and their superior individual hockey skills told in the first half. In the second half Witham played with real heart and stuck to a game plan, conceding no goals and finished strongly. In the next three games, Witham scored 7 and didn’t concede to progress through to the next round of the competition in March where they will represent Lincolnshire – a superb achievement.
Witham Hall 0-4 Spratton Hall
The 2nd XI hockey team did themselves proud against a very skilful Spratton Hall side on Saturday. In the opening exchanges the boys found themselves defending deep and absorbing a lot of pressure. Unfortunately, this led to a couple of quick, scrambled goals and after ten minutes they were 2-0 down. However, they responded superbly and as the game progressed got more of a foothold in the game. With Vyv driving the team forward, the 2nd XI found themselves playing in Spratton’s half a lot more. A couple of chances were missed from close range but pleasingly, the boys were playing hockey in all the right areas of the pitch. In the midfield they began to win a lot more 50/50 tackles with Max and Finn putting in excellent shifts. Harry also came to life on the right wing and started to create more and more opportunities for our three forwards. Unfortunately, with the 2nd XI pushing for goals to bring the game level, goals were conceded down the other end, with Spratton breaking quickly and showing excellent composure in front of goal. The final score of 4-0 does not reflect the collective efforts of all those involved. The boys should certainly not be disheartened and we now look forwards to playing Maidwell Hall this Wednesday.
2nd XI Hockey 3-1 Oundle
The 2nd XI were on fine form at Oundle on Wednesday taking an early 2-0 lead through a couple of very well worked short corners. Chris injected the ball accurately time and time again to Ben, who used the slip pass to very good effect. Clinical finishing saw the first half end with the 2nd team leading 2-0 and looking very comfortable. However, the boys soon realised that 2-0 was a very dangerous lead and that things can soon change in the blink of an eye. Two minutes in to the second half and Oundle’s powerful front three had burst through the second teams defence, finishing well and putting themselves back into the game immediately. However, the boys held their shape well, kept their composure and managed to score a third breakaway goal through Ben to take a 3-1 lead. Mayhem ensued for the last five minutes where some frantic defending saw Will clear the ball off the line a couple of times. At the full time whistle, the final score was 3-1. An excellent performance made by all members of the second team.
Witham Hall 2nd VII 4
TDA U13A 2
The 2nd VII hockey team were in fine form on Wednesday against a physical Thomas Deacon Academy side. A slow start saw the boys concede an early goal but from there on in they played some outstanding hockey. Playing breakaway hockey certainly paid dividends, moving the ball down the wide channels early and exploiting the space in behind. Harry was in fine form and scored all four Witham first half goals. The second half was very much a different story with the 2nd VII having to defend for long periods. However, they managed to get over the line, winning 4-2. An impressive run of three unbeaten games is now a great platform from which they can build on.
Witham Hall 3rd VII Hockey 0-5 Thomas Deacon Academy
On Wednesday the 3rd VII hockey team found it incredibly difficult to contain a very skilful TDA side. Pleasingly in the first fifteen, the 3rd’s held their shape and were very disciplined, thwarting many TDA attacks. However, with the pressure building as the game progressed and a moment of madness, they found themselves 1-0 down at half time. In the second half the game became a lot more open with the 3rd’s pushing for an equaliser. Unfortunately they couldn’t register any shots at goal and got caught out on the break numerous times. The final score of 5-0 does not reflect the energy, hunger and desire of all those who represented Witham. Well done to all those who took part!

The 3rd team squad have enjoyed a combination of VII and XI a side fixtures this term, producing some entertaining and enjoyable hockey. The VII a-side option has also enabled two 4th VII fixtures. The squad as a whole has worked hard to develop their skills as well as their understanding of the game. Matches have been perfectly pitched, with just Oundle and Thomas Deacon proving too strong for us. Against fellow Prep Schools Spratton Hall, Maidwell Hall and St Hugh’s the boys fought hard to record victories, the defensive effort against Spratton being particularly praiseworthy. With the weather having been kind to date, we now look forward to the second half of term.
