1st VII v Stamford HS U13A

WHS – 37
SHS – 5

The 1st team netball girls played another consistent, high quality game versus Stamford High School.  They were a tall side, which gave Witham something to think about.  Witham had to ensure that they kept the ball short and sharp, with no overheads into the shooting circle.  Witham made a good start and were up 7 – 1 at quarter time.  Defensively, Witham were extremely strong and Stamford found it very difficult to find the gaps into the shooting circle. The third quarter was exciting, with Stamford failing to convert a goal.  The last quarter was fast and skilful; it was lovely to see the girls enjoying their netball and really working as a team.  It was a super game, which allowed Witham to test out the set pieces.  Well done girls!

1st Team Netball v Oakham U13A

WHS – 16
Oakham – 22

The 1st team headed over to Oakham for their toughest fixture to date.  Oakham were unbeaten and had certainly won their matches by a clear margin so far. This was going to be a test for our players and it was just what the 1st team needed.  The girls needed to be tested under pressure over 40 minutes of game play. The first quarter was tight and there was some excellent accurate shots going in by both sides. Our mid court players were sticking to their game plan and there was not much between the two teams. After the first quarter, Witham were losing 4-7. In the second quarter Oakham dominated again bringing the score to 13-7. At half time, Witham made a few positional and tactical changes and the game was on. In the third quarter we drew 4-4 and the final quarter we drew 6-6. Witham really started to show what they were made of and by dominant defence and calm set plays, Witham started to lead the way. Unfortunately, we made too many mistakes in the first half to win the game, but this game really showed the potential of every player under pressure and the improvement that the 1st team has made this season.  Well done and thank you to all our wonderful side-line team; our parents and families, thank you for all your support and belief throughout.

2nd VII  v Oakham U12A

WHS – 6
Oakham – 12

The Witham girls travelled to Oakham to play against their Under 12A netball team. Both teams started slowly but the Oakham girls managed to force an early lead in the first quarter. Witham responded but were unable to keep possession of the ball sufficiently for their shooters to close the gap and were beaten by a stronger team.  All of the girls played nice netball and coped with the changes to positions and teams very well.

3rd VII v Oakham U13B

WHS – 10
Oakham – 14

An excellent game played by both teams! All the girls worked really hard and should be proud of themselves. The team placed good pressure on their opposing players in defence. A special mention must go to Izzy who worked the ball up through the channels on the court, as well as Holly (captain) who really started to step things up defensively. Witham managed to keep the scores very close and lost narrowly.

U11A v Stamford U12A

Witham Hall - 8
Stamford HS U12A - 22

The match against the Stamford U12A team was a step too far for the current Witham U11As; they were all taller and more athletic than the Year 6s. However, it set the girls up well for their matches that followed. They spent 40 minutes fighting hard for every ball and their commitment and effort was first class. By the last quarter Witham had four shots at goal converting only one, but the Stamford girls only scored three which at least showed some good progress. The team was unfortunate in losing Rose A at GD before half time due to a fall; Josie proved to be the stronger shooter converting seven of her nine chances.

U11A v Oakham U12B

Witham Hall - 10
Oakham U12B - 10

Just before half term the team went to face another U12 team – this time Oakham U12Bs. Once again they were the small team on the court. Oakham played a nice game which showed flow and confidence, plus they had a couple of key strong players at GA and C. The game was neck and neck the whole way through with Oakham dominating in the first quarter (mainly due to all the missed shots at goal from Witham!) and the third quarter, while Witham were stronger in the second and fourth quarters. Bella was on fire with her shooting once the girls got going and Millie made a good start playing in her first A team game. However, generally it was a shame to see so many passing and ball handling errors – something that the girls need to get right as we approach the IAPS tournaments.

U11A v St Hugh’s U11A

Witham Hall - 23
St Hugh’s - 2

Against St Hugh’s the team showed greater flow and those who had played in the tough previous match now found it easy to get free and mark effectively. The shooters, Bella and Josie for the most part, were on fire and shot with consistency throughout – Rose B came into shoot too in the last quarter and converted a nice goal with confidence. Poppy was a tower of strength in the centre and Sophie and Matilda really kept firm and strong in defence. However, it was the improved passage of play up the court that was a pleasure to see.

U11B/C v Oakham U12E

WHS – 15
Oakham  – 7

A mixture of Year 5 and 6 girls played against a tall U12E Oakham team. Despite the girls not having played together before they quickly found their rhythm and by half time we were winning 6 – 2. Our opponents came back strongly scoring a number of goals but our girls showed determination and coupled with excellent movement into space and great shooting, we extended our lead to 15 – 7. A very impressive performance by an enthusiastic group of girls who put into practice the skills they have learnt so far this term. Very well done to every single one of you!

U9A v Leicester Grammar JS U9A

WHS – 4
LGJS – 3

The U9A team had a most progressive netball match against Leicester Grammar JS. Witham lost the first quarter 1-0 due to some poor passing and not marking our players. After a shuffle around of positions, we drew the second quarter with both teams scoring: our passing was improving and we were beginning to work the ball into the circle well, with Lydia scoring our first goal. The third quarter was better still, with Alexandra scoring another goal and Leicester also scored. In the final quarter Witham really started to get it together both in defence and attack, with some lovely passing flowing up the court, and Alexandra scored two more to make it a hatric! Well done girls, a fantastic match!

U9B v Leicester Grammar JS U9B

WHS – 8
LGJS - 3

All the year 3 and 4‘s travelled to Leicester on a very cold afternoon to play netball. The girls played extremely well in difficult conditions as their hands were very cold. The ball travelled from end to end, involving all the players. Everyone enjoyed the games and the matches ended with a win for Witham after losing the first quarter, showing great progress.

U8 v Leicester Grammar JS U9C

WHS – 3
LGJS - 3

After a long journey, the girls were hit by the cold weather and had to quickly warm up, ready for their match. Both teams started slowly, however as the game proceeded the girls got into their stride, and the defence became solid, making it difficult for the Leicester girls. After the team reshuffle at half time Witham further improved their game play. Everyone displayed terrific team spirit and should be really proud of their performance.
