U11 Tennis Tournament at Rugby school
Bella, Lilia, Oscar and Charlie travelled to Rugby for their annual coaching morning followed by a competitive tournament in the afternoon. The weather was unseasonably cold but the cardio session soon warmed the players up. The standard of coaching was extremely high, undertaken by very experienced and well qualified coaches. In the round robin phase of the tournament the Witham players took a while to get going, narrowly losing to Berkhampsted A, but quickly followed up with two convincing victories. This enabled the team to progress to the main draw where they had two close games which they both won. In the semi-final the team had to face Beacons school who fielded four very strong boys, but the Witham team fought hard only narrowly losing. In the third and forth play off Witham once again faced Berkhampsted but had now found their rhythm and an even match saw Berkhampsted win by one game. This was an excellent performance by all four players especially as Lilia and Oscar were a year young and most of the school's had many more pupils to choose from.

The first inter-school junior tennis match of the season saw a mixture of years 4, 5 and 6 travel to local rivals Stamford on Friday evening. The standard of play was very good right across the board with some very close matches from both the boys and girls. The wind made it difficult to control the ball but the Witham players managed to cope better than their opponents, especially with their serving. All of the pairs had long rallies, many of the games going to deuce. The boys’ team lost just the one set and the girls three resulting in a convincing win. All of the players equipped themselves very well and should be proud of their performances.
