Chess Success

20 Nov 2014

10 children from Witham took part in the Lincolnshire festival of chess competition held at Stamford School. As well as an individual chess tournament this is the main selection tournament for the Lincolnshire County team hence the standard was exceptionally high.

We saw some fantastic play from the Witham pupils, their concentration and focus on their matches was excellent, one of Ewan Rodells matches lasted 50mins!, we had lots of smiles win or lose!

In the Under 11's category Robert Tombs came 2nd only 1/2 point behind the winner and Ewan Rodell came 3rd only 1/2 point behind Robert.

In the under 10's Sam Smith came second again only 1/2 point behind the winner.

In the Under 9's Richard Tomlinson came 2nd and Poppy Wraith came 3rd.

In the Under 8's Shivali Patel came 2nd (on a tie break) getting the same points as the winner!

We now wait to hear which pupils have made the County squad.

Good luck to Hamish Gordon-Stewart who will be taking part in the North Lincolnshire tournament in Grimsby on Saturday.

Chess next term continues on Tuesday evenings and Thursday morning breakfast club, we will be entering the Delancy National Schools Chess Tournament which many children have taken part in previous years. We are planning to run this on Tuesday evenings and at Thursday breakfast club for those children who don't attend the Tuesday evening club. Coaching will continue alongside this on Thursday mornings.
