Witham Hall Rugby Update
01 Nov 2017
Witham Hall 45
King’s Ely 0
The 1st XIII produced an excellent all-round performance to defeat a competitive and talented King’s Ely team.
Playing into a strong breeze the side were forced to keep the ball in hand from all parts of the field, but did this superbly throughout the first half, forwards and backs combining to great effect. The fact that three of the four first half scores came by the corner flags was a testimony to the width with which the team played. With the strong breeze behind them, much of the second period was played in the King’s half, but the committed defence of the visitors meant that further tries were hard earned. Nevertheless, 9 scores was a strong reflection of the performance level, on which the side will look to build upon again after half term.
Witham Hall Colts A 20-35 King’s Ely Colts A
The Colts A team did themselves proud on a windy afternoon at King’s Ely. After a long journey and a quick warm up, Witham took an early lead through an opportunistic break up the blindside by Oscar. An excellent start was followed by a few lapses in concentration, which meant that the boys found themselves 20-5 down at half time; missed tackles and a lack of rucking with real purpose was costing them dearly. However, in the second half, the Colts A’s played with far more purpose and through maintaining possession more regularly, were able to use their slick handling skills to score a couple of well-worked tries. As King’s Ely tired, the boys kept pushing hard to bring the scores level but again, a couple of silly errors, losing the ball in contact, cost them dearly. The final score of 20-35 does not reflect what a great game of rugby this was. A big thank you to all the parents who came to support on such a long trip. A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon!
Witham Hall U10A 70-15 King’s Ely U10A
Our Year 5 A-team completed an unbeaten first half of term with a comprehensive victory away at King’s Ely. Despite the mammoth coach journey, Witham blew away the opposition with excellent handling, enthusiastic support play and tenacious work at the breakdown. The scorers of our 14 tries were Angus (5), Harry (2), Ben (2), Alfie (2), Louis (2) and Henry (1); and Oliver and Hugo also contributed superbly. Well done everyone!
U8’s @ Laxton Junior School
The Year 3 boys were raring to go for their much anticipated first matches of the season. After weeks of training the boys lined up, ready to put their new skills to the test. After being split to two even sides, the boys played some really impressive rugby, passing the ball out of the tackle well and creating space on both sides. Running well with the ball in hand provided many opportunities and the tackling got better as the team gained confidence. At the end of the day, the Under 8 Squad remained unbeaten with 3 wins and a draw in what was a super afternoon of competitive matches played in great spirit. Thank you to Laxton for hosting and to all the parents for their continued support. Well done boys on a brilliant first day of rugby fixtures!
