Witham Hall Rugby Update
08 Nov 2017
Witham Hall U13 XIII 45
Old Buckenham Hall U13 XIII 5
The U13 XIII continued their excellent run with an effective performance at OBH. Pleasingly, they were quickly into their stride and two scores inside the first quarter settled early nerves. There was a tendency to ‘force’ the play a little too much which, coupled with some ineffective decision making, allowed good positions to be wasted in terms of points, but nevertheless good defensive pressure ensured field position was maintained and three further tries were scored before the break.
The side then enjoyed an excellent quarter, becoming more ambitious and thereby more effective, and some outstanding interplay showed the XIII at their best. OBH too upped their game in response, ensuring a highly competitive half. A defensive lapse saw the home team rewarded for their efforts, but a superb team try on the final whistle rounded off an excellent afternoon.
Witham Hall U12 XIII 20
Old Buckenham Hall U12 XIII 5
An U12 side visited Old Buckenham Hall on Saturday in what was a closely fought and highly entertaining fixture. After the long journey the boys were ready for a tough game and so it proved. In the first half Witham had most of the play, but excellent defensive organisation and tackling from OBH meant despite the positive attacking play it was still 0-0 at half time.
Knowing that they had worked OBH hard in defence, the message was to continue playing the same way, sure that the tries would come. This was the case when Louis cut through the line to score Witham’s first try. More solid carries from the forwards and nice handling in the backs saw Charlie go over for a second, followed shortly after by a third from Jack after a typically dynamic run. OBH looked like they were getting back in the game after going over in the corner, but the game was put to bed after Charlie scored a fourth Witham try on the final whistle. A very good win against a well organised and disciplined team. Final score OBH 5 – 20 Witham Hall.
Witham Hall Colts A 55
Old Buckenham Hall Colts A 20
The Colts A rugby team put in a sterling performance on Saturday away at OBH. After a long drive and a quick warm up, it was brilliant to see the boys firing on all cylinders, making a very strong start to the match.
Early tries saw the Colts go in at half time comfortably ahead, although complacency was starting to creep in and this combined with whitewash fever, was stopping the boys putting the game to bed. Pleasingly, in the second half, the ball was moved through the hands far more effectively and the full width of the pitch was used; some excellent team tries were scored. OBH responded strongly to this, scoring four superb solo tries, with strong running and quick feet. The match ended with a moment of brilliance between Jack and Oscar who ran the length of the pitch together whilst passing the ball quickly and effectively. The final score of 55-20 is something that the boys can be proud of.
