The Under 8 girls travelled to St Hugh’s for their first match against St Hugh’s.  After a ‘Nativity singing themed’ journey, we arrived ready for action.  The girls were a little bit nervous but they were very excited, which was great.  St Hugh’s had only 7 girls and Witham had 12 girls so we played four quarters, which made sure every girl had pitch time and really gained confidence in the whole experience.

The first quarter: Witham took a bit of time to get their positioning sorted out, which gave St Hugh’s a lot of possession.  They scored very quickly, which certainly woke up Witham.  The latter part of the first quarter and the second quarter was so much better!  Witham started to show what they were about.  Millie Atkinson, Charlotte Welch, Isabelle Blythe and Shivali Patel tackled hard and won the ball for Witham.  Lilia Dunn, Mollie Deaton, Rachel Leckey and Rosie Johnson really started to find the channels and pass the ball into space.  Witham scored twice, which gave us a 3-1 lead by half time.  We had a different combination in the second half, so it took Witham a bit of time to find their places, but they soon gained confidence.  Rachel Leckey, Tilly Golland, Rose Allport and Izzie Leverton certainly kept the pressure on, by marking and tackling strongly.  Matilda Halford made some excellent runs into Witham’s attacking ‘D’ enabling some shots at goal.  Witham scored another quick goal and the score was 4-1.  The final quarter was tight and Witham were starting to get a little tired.  St Hugh’s battled back in the final three minutes and scored twice, which was quite a shock for the Witham team.  They fought hard and stuck tight to their game plan.  The final whistle went.  The score was Witham 4, St Hugh’s 3.  A super match throughout.  I am very proud of the girls!  They were a pleasure to be with on and off the pitch and I look forward to seeing them representing Witham Hall again soon.  A terrific team!  Thank you to all our ‘non-playing’ team; our wonderful parents, who supported us throughout.  Thank you to St Hugh’s for the fixture, it was a super afternoon.

U8 BOYS’ RUGBY:

U8 Round Robin Rugby v St. Hugh's

On a lovely sunny afternoon at Witham on a very well prepared pitch the U8 boys put in some impressive performances. Three Witham teams and one St. Hugh’s team played each other in a round robin format during the course of the afternoon and it was wonderful to see all the boys put into practice what they had learnt in training. The year 3 boys were ably led by Johnny Hall, Richard Tomlinson, Kit Chatterton and Eddie Howells, with all four of them leading by example, putting in some very strong tackles. By the end of the afternoon, St. Hugh’s had won all of their games, conceding only one try in the process which is a credit to the way they defended.

The Witham boys should be proud of the way they played. Every member of each Witham team gave it their all and never let their heads drop.  A big thank you must go to all the parents who came to support the boys.
