Clean sweep for the Hockey Girls!

06 Dec 2017

1st VII v Maidwell 1st VII

Witham – 4
Maidwell – 2

Witham started the game sleepily and let the opposition swarm their defensive end. After a barrage of short corners, Witham were a goal down and needed a reaction. After a stern team talk, the girls rallied and started to play some decent hockey - using the width and moving the ball quicker. After a much improved second half, the girls ended up winning 4-2. Thank you to all the parents for their continued support.

1st VII v St Hugh’s 1st VII

Witham – 5
St Hugh’s – 1

Rotating the squad a little and featuring Charlotte in goal from the Under 11s provided a great opportunity for some fresher faces to get some game time at a higher level. It did take a while to break down a stern St Hugh's side who battled hard. With the score tight at half time, the next goal would be key and luckily the Witham girls got it, through Ella. Charlotte made some superb saves to keep the score down with Mia and Bella defending resolutely. The score finished 5-1 but it really should have been more resounding considering the amount of chances that fell to Witham's feet. Thank you to St Hugh's for hosting us so well and to all the support from the parents.

2nd VII v Maidwell 2nd VII

Witham – 1
Maidwell – 0

The 2nd VII hockey team had another good game in the bitter cold. The ball was moved equally between ourselves and our opponents, Maidwell Hall, with both teams struggling to set up much attacking play. After half-time a number of short corners were awarded, but failed to be converted thanks to both team’s defenders who worked hard to clear the ball. With a super quick change of possession our girls caught Maidwell off guard and were able to score. Maidwell fought back hard but were unable to equalise. Well done girls who never complained about the cold miserable weather - very proud of you all!

3rd VII v Maidwell 3rd VII

Witham – 4
Maidwell – 2

After a hard game against Spratton Hall, the mighty 3rd VII team were ready to conquer against Maidwell Hall.  Both teams started well, with some excellent passing, tackling and shooting. Hera in goal, made some great saves, clearing the ball wide for our defensive team of Arabella, Millie and Eliza to pick up. Eleanor, Jemima and Kitty were really looking to pass the ball through the channels and moved into space for a return ball. Up front, Daisy and Holly were figure heads and certainly gave the team confidence and belief when entering our D to score. Isabella worked hard in the middle channel and really showed her tackling ability when closing down the attack. At half time, the score was Witham 2, Maidwell 2.

After a direct team talk by Mrs Welch, the team were ready to fight and try and win the game. Minutes after the whistle, Isabella drew the defence and struck the ball hard, just outside the D, which was deflected by a Maidwell defender. Witham really started to show their potential and looked like they could score another. With minutes to go, Jemima drove forward into the attack and beat three defenders to then strike the ball into the goal. The final whistle went and Witham had won! It was a great game, showing determination and a belief to win. Well done to all the team and thank you to our side-line supporters.

U11A v Maidwell U11A

Witham – 6
Maidwell – 0

We decided to take large squads to Maidwell to get more girls involved in the fixture. To help substitutions it was decided we would play 3 lots of 12 minutes, instead of halves. Witham had a slow first third, with Maidwell’s defence playing particularly well. Eliza finally opened the flood gates though, scoring two successive goals. In the second third Witham really stepped up and unfortunately Maidwell slid down, not making tackles and allowing Witham to pass around them. Rose and Alexandra (on her debut) took full advantage of this scoring 3 more goals between them. Maidwell did have a couple of breaks though, but Charlotte and Matilda made short work of any advances. In the final third, with players restricted and Witham maintaining all of the possession, Millie A slotted the final goal in, assisted by Millie D (also on her debut). Well done on a most positive performance girls – your teamwork and passing were superb.

U11B v St Hugh’s

Witham – 10
St Hugh’s – 0

This was a very one sided game with Witham in the ascendance from the beginning. The St Hugh's goal keeper was the best player saving many attempts which would have resulted in an even more emphatic win. All the Witham girls contributed to the victory and most got themselves on the score sheet.
