Fantastic Final Hockey Matches

18 Dec 2017

1st VII v Oakham 1st VII

Witham – 1
Oakham – 0

The girls truly were fired up for their last game of the season and one that would be the last hockey game at Witham for the Year 8 Girls. To add to the fixture, Oakham had beaten Witham comfortably in a tournament at the beginning of the season so the team were keen to impress their progress on the opposition. As soon as the ball was pushed back, Witham stole the ascendency and never seemed to let it go. Oakham did have an outstanding player in the midfield and the plan was to restrict her and her shooting opportunities by getting strong in the tackle – the girls certainly did that and more. Not only did she not get a shot on target, Witham did not receive a shot on goal all match – a feat that is impressive in itself for forty minutes. The Witham girls created chances continually but failed to grasp the goal – something that was surely bound to come with the pressure. Oakham were a threat on the break but the defence was the best it’s been all season with Lulie, Mia and Bella shielding Tillie so well. In the second half the pressure on the Oakham goal continued with Katie, Poppy, Sienna and Ella submitting a barrage of attacks. After Ella had a short corner just saved, she instructed Bonnie to take the next. Bonnie dummied on her forehand beating the runner and smashed the ball on her reverse stick, clipping the top of the corner of the backboard – an astonishing finish and one deserving of winning any game. At the final whistle the girls celebrated a remarkable victory after playing some of the best hockey all season. Such a tremendous way to top off the season. Well done and thank you to all the girls for their commitment over the last term – it really has been a season to remember.

2nd VII v Oakham 2nd VII

Witham – 2
Oakham – 1

The last game of the season was one of great excitement. The 2nd VII girls were determined to finish on a high and I’m delighted to report that they did exactly what they set out to do! Our opponents Oakham, made us work hard in both attack and defence with their solid stick work and passing skills. With text book team work, moving the ball from midfield to the forwards, we were able to score a superb goal to take an early lead but Oakham were quick to reply with a great goal from a short corner. After half-time both teams were showing good individual still skills and attacking moves into their opposition’s circles forcing the defence from both sides to concentrate hard and clear the ball up to the mid field. However, a fantastic second goal from Witham secured the match 2 -1. Very well done girls for an excellent final match of the season. You have worked hard all season and every single one of you should be proud of your contribution to the team’s success!

3rd VII v Oakham 3rd VII

Witham – 3 (Daisy 2, Isabella 1)
Oakham – 2

The might 3rd VII travelled to Oakham School for their last fixture of the season. The girls knew it was going to be a tough game, but were ready to put all their heart and soul into their last game. With Hera back in goal as GK, we knew we were as strong as we could be to win this game. The first half was very even and possession was 50/50.  Witham tackled hard and certainly tracked back better than they ever had before. The passing was consistently strong and accurate which led Daisy to drive up the wing, receive the ball and score an early goal. The score was 1-1 with everything to play for.  The half time talk was positive with a hint of ‘we can do this!’.  Witham went back on the pitch, Daisy, Isabella, Jemima, Eleanor, Kitty and Izzy were dominant in the midfield and pushing into attack, with the backs; Arabella, Eliza and Millie fighting hard to keep the ball away from Hera. The scores were suddenly level again after Daisy scored a second goal, with only minutes to go!  The moment came when Millie stole the ball from the strongest Oakham player, passed it through to Izzy, who then passed it accurately to Isabella to score! The final whistle went and the final score was Witham 3, Oakham 2, what a game!  This certainly was the best game of the season for the 3rd team, under so much pressure and a real highlight to finish on. The attitude, approach and belief has been exemplary and I thank the girls for giving me everything in their play this season. It has been a privilege coaching such a wonderful team. Well done girls and thank you to all the supporters who have supported the team this season.

U11A v Oakham U12A

Witham – 3
Oakham – 1

What a superb match to finish the season with; playing a tough game of hockey that tested our U11A girls, and coming away with a well fought win! Witham started well with Eliza scoring the first goal, driving into the D and smashing it into the bottom corner. Oakham then had the majority of the possession and certainly dissevered their goal after some brilliant attacking play. Charlotte had a one-on-one with their centre forward and couldn’t quite get to it in time. Just before half time Eliza intercepted a poor pass between Oakham players, sprinted up the pitch, beating the GK and slotting the ball into the bottom corner. Mollie and Bunny worked relentlessly up and down the pitch, tracking back and tackling well.

The second half started just as competitively, with both teams really battling it out. Witham had a good spell of attacking play, led by Lilia, Matilda, Rose and Eliza, but it came to nothing, with Oakham having the counter attack. Millie had a superb game, clearing the ball out and really commanding the defence. Charlotte had plenty to do in this game and saved shot after shot after shot. Lilia showed just how much progress she has made this term, beating 3 players into the D and scoring the final game of the match.

U11B v Oakham U12C

Witham – 3
Oakham – 3

The final game of the season saw Witham play the Oakham Under 12C team. Witham started much more positively than the opposition scoring in the first few minutes. We dominated most of the play in the first half and had many opportunities to score, but only managed to convert one more, making it 2-0 at half time. In the second half Oakham found their feet and had much more of the possession, but Witham scored a third goal on the break. Unfortunately the Witham girls took their foot off the accelerator and allowed Oakham back into the game. Oakham scored three goals fairly rapidly, making Witham panic and they only just held on for the draw.

U11C v Maidwell Hall U11B

Witham – 9
Maidwell – 1

The U11C Hockey team, with the help of one of Lilia, Bunny and Matilda, played a really good match against Maidwell Hall. On a somewhat square pitch with very large ‘D’s the girls quickly found their feet. After some difficulty of getting the ball past the keeper Poppy made a strong angled shot to take us 1-0 up at the 10 minute point. After that the girls never looked back and goal followed goal. They really benefitted from the superior distribution skills of Lilia and Matilda who helped the year 5s also keep their shape and width. A great team effort – well done all!

U11C v Oakham U12D

Witham – 3
Oakham – 0

The girls were slightly worried about their final encounter of the term v Oakham U12s. The Oakham girls made them feel rather small and young! However, this was a really good contest with the play regularly down both ends of the pitch. Clara made some good saves keeping a clean score sheet, which really helped the team – her saves were impressive as a couple of times she was faced with a one on one with no defender in sight! Rosie worked tirelessly in the mid-field continually battling to regain possession and re-distribute the ball. Lydia and Olivia were dynamic on the forward line and it was in fact Rosie, Lydia and Olivia who scored the goals. However, most improved in this match were Grace, who was committed all game with such an improvement in stick skills and movement evident it was a pleasure to see, and Poppy who really made an effort to put our coaching points in practice into the game. Well done U11Cs – a first class effort, which showed the fantastic progress that you have all made!

U9A v Leicester Grammar JS U9A

Witham – 7
LGJS – 0

The U9A team had their final match of the season, away at Leicester. They have played some lovely hockey this term, making great progress. The team effort produced lots of goals against Leicester and with the girls playing in several different positions; they really showcased their versatility and skill – well done girls!

U9B v Leicester Grammar JS U9B

Witham – 3
LGJS – 2

The U9B team worked fantastically as a team in this closely contested match against Leicester Grammar. Olivia worked very hard in defence, making some great clearances. The team effort produced 3 goals, resulting in a great win to top off what has been a most progressive term of hockey – well done!
