Exciting Start to the Netball Term!
23 Jan 2018
1st VII v Spratton Hall 1st VII
Witham – 6
Spratton – 4
The first team headed over to Spratton after a tough tournament at Kimbolton at the weekend. The first quarter was very even, with both teams making silly mistakes and not getting into the flow of attack. The score at the end of the first quarter was Witham 1, Spratton 2. The second quarter, Spratton started to get into a consistent groove of good passing and strong channel play. Witham were still making mistakes, which cost them that quarter. The score at half time was Witham 1, Spratton 3. The second half was better, with Witham starting to look for the first time ball and attack the circle edge with determination and belief. The third quarter score was Witham 3, Spratton 4. The final quarter was our best, with quick passing from the centre pass, hitting the attacking third with speed and direction. It was a tough game, but a game that Witham certainly learnt a lot from. Thank you to all the parents who came to support on a very cold, damp day.
2nd VII v Spratton Hall 2nd VII
Witham – 2
Spratton – 9
The first match of the season saw Witham travel to Spratton. Both teams started slowly and took time to find their rhythm and the score was goalless after the first quarter. Spratton's shooters began to find their range and they pulled ahead and scored 6 goals in the second quarter. A change in positions in the second half saw Witham get onto the score sheet but it was not enough to catch Spratton, who ran out winners by 7 goals. This was a good start to the season given the bitterly cold weather conditions and is an excellent base to work from for the rest of the season.
2nd VII v St Hugh’s 1st VII
Witham – 13
St Hugh’s – 10
The opportunity to play indoors had a dramatic effect on the standard of play this week. Witham started well with the shooters being very accurate right from the start. Both teams were very frenetic which resulted in quite a lot of handling errors by but Witham played the better netball. The whole team played extremely well, the defence were very strong, minimising St Hugh's’ opportunities to score. The shooter's worked together very well and mid court moved the ball up the court effectively. A great all round team effort.
3rd VII v Spratton Hall 3rd VII
Witham – 1
Spratton – 18
Our first match of the season was away against a strong Spratton side. From the first whistle our girls were made to work hard in defence with Spratton the only team scoring in the first quarter. The second quarter started off better with some good passing and critical interceptions allowing us to spend more time in our attacking goal third. The game sped up and the ball was quickly moving from one goal end to the other. Unfortunately we were not able to capitalise on this and the Spratton defence were working hard, making some important interceptions for their team. Their shooters were on top form and scoring at every opportunity throughout the match. The last half of the match played out much the same as the first with Spratton only increasing their lead. However, the final score does not reflect how hard the Witham girls worked and how much they improved each quarter.
U11A v Spratton Hall U11A
Witham – 18
Spratton – 4
This was a really good start to the netball term with all the girls working hard for each other and fully committed to each and every attacking and defensive opportunity. Despite some changes to give chances for some of the girls to play in a range of positions, the girls remained focussed and ambitious. Eliza was superb in the attacking ‘D’ converting 16 of her 20 opportunities. Rose and Mollie closed down the Spratton attack and Lilia and Matilda worked very well together in the middle. However, overall a great team effort – well done all!
U11B v Spratton Hall U11B
Witham – 6
Spratton – 6
On a bitter Wednesday afternoon the U11 teams faced Spratton Hall for their first matches of the season. With it being so early in the season a number of players rotated between the U11B and C teams for each quarter. The U11B’s started strongly with Izzie scoring the first two goals after some super passing into the circle. Spratton quickly responded, scoring after a few mistakes from our girls. The 2nd quarter unfortunately only lasted a few minutes before Millie sprained her ankle and half time was called with the score at 2-1. After a little chat at half time the girls were ready to mark tightly and pass accurately. The third quarter was very balanced from both teams with neither managing to score. However, the final quarter was extremely exciting with the ball being passed from one end of the court to the other. Both teams scored numerous goals, well done Poppy for scoring 4, forcing the defensive players from both sides to work hard. A good first match despite the cold, well done everyone!
U11B v Foremarke Hall U11B
Witham – 10
Formarke – 1
The U11B had a super second match of the season against Foremarke Hall. Having drawn their first match earlier in the week the girls were determined and excited to play their next match. Foremarke lost the toss so Witham started with possession of the ball and quickly fed the ball into the circle. After a few ‘warm up shots’ Izzie scored the opening goal of the match. It wasn’t long before she scored her 2nd and 3rd goals with some fantastic centre court passing feeding the ball into the circle. The second quarter saw a few changes of position and Poppy and Izzie both scored to bring the half time score to 5 – 0. The defence continued to work hard making super interceptions and marking tightly. Poppy scored another goal alongside Tilly but with a slight slip of concentration our opponents were able to score. The final quarter once again saw Witham dominating play and the match finished 10 - 1 to Witham. Very well done girls for all your hard work.
U11C v Spratton Hall U11C
Witham – 4
Spratton – 4
The first game of the season got off to quite a slow start, with both teams spending the first quarter finding their feet, resulting in a 0-0 score. The second quarter was much more exciting as the ball begun to move from end to end in this very closely matched game. Poppy MT and Ellie-Bella both scored against some tall opposition. Spratton popped one in despite Grace and Rosie’s best efforts in defence. Spratton began to run away with the game in the 3rd quarter and took their total to 3! The team started to fall flat and were succumbing to the cold. Izzie came into the team for the final quarter and really lifted the energy and enthusiasm levels; both Izzie and Alexandra scored putting Witham in the lead! Unfortunately Sammy and Olivia couldn’t quite get the rebounds and Spratton managed to score the equaliser. It was a great way to start the term off and the Witham girls showed grit and enthusiasm.
