The boys were keen to take the momentum from the thrilling Spratton match into their next fixture against Maidwell in the driving, bitter wind. Despite the adverse weather conditions the boys started well, dominating possession and looking for the first goal. Despite the pressure, it took a while for the goal to arrive with very little space to move in the opposition D. George came close twice before finally rocketing the ball into the top corner from a short corner via a deflection. Witham continued to push for the second to put the game to bed but as the game went on, Maidwell became more of a danger on the counter. Harry L grew into the game setting up some well worked attacks with the ever dangerous Joe setting up via the right. Witham hit the post from Oli after a quite sublime save, then the bar and then had a goal disallowed marginally from a thunderous effort from Louis after being set up from Charlie. The boys remained composed and closed the game out finishing 1-0 winners – a very dominant 1-0. Lots to work on for the next match but another good result to take into Oundle next Wednesday.

Report

The 2nd team were in imperious form on a cold afternoon at Maidwell Hall. A perfect start, saw wave after wave of Witham attack with the only thing missing, a goal. As the first half progressed, the precision that had alluded the front three of Alex, Sam and Hamish, soon appeared and goals were flying in. Alex had a wonderful game, scoring four goals and was ably supported by our two wingers who were putting in some excellent crosses. At half time, it was very much a case of getting a quick drink and then continuing in the same vein. In the second half, Eddie kept pushing the team forwards from the centre of midfield and this enabled Freddie and Guy rare opportunities to score in more attacking positions. Playing with three high sitting forwards in the second half certainly helped, where the 2nd team were able to score some impressive breakaway goals to seal a 6-0 victory. With two games under their belts, the 2nd’s can be very proud of their achievements.

The Under 12 side, together for the first time, were keen to test the St Hugh’s 1st VII on a very wet and cold Saturday afternoon. The Witham side immediately pressed the opposition, forcing an early short corner where Charlie powered a shot into the bottom corner, deflecting off the keeper on route. For the remainder of the match, Witham had to work extremely hard to force attacks and track back against a very skilful side. After a couple of extremely impressive saves from James, the pressure soon told as after a smart move from St Hugh’s on the counter they drew level. The game then turned into an end to end affair with Louis working hard in the midfield and Hugo keeping the attacks at bay. At the final whistle, Witham’s determination meant they finished with a draw against a team far superior in skill to them. It really was a quite impressive result.

We were against tough opposition and started the game well with good crossing from the midfielders. The first goal came late in the first half when Toby did a great cross and Angus scored, with the ball passing through the goalkeeper’s legs. Towards the end of the half Oscar got the ball early in the midfield and with time to spare, shot bottom right, scoring a brilliant goal. Then it was half-time. In the second half we had the lead and played strongly, scoring five goals. The highlight was when Toby tried to cross the ball to Angus but accidently scored from the centre circle. The ball bounced over the goalie and in! The final score was 7-0 to Witham Hall. Two goals for Angus, two for James, one for Toby, one for Oscar and one for Noah. Well played everyone.

Report

In their first outing of the season, and after very little training together, the Colts A hockey team faced the challenge of playing against St Hugh’s U13B. Despite the age gap, the Witham boys went out fighting, with Oscar scoring within minutes! In just 10 minutes of the first half Witham were already up 4 goals to 0. Harry, Jack B and Henry worked tremendously hard both in midfield and attack, whilst Fred and Freddie made sure Jack B had very little to do in goal. Ned and Rafe both made huge improvements over the course of the 40 minute game, and Rafe worked particularly hard in the second half. The teams passing and moving off the ball put them head and shoulders above the St Hugh’s side and it certainly bodes well for the future of boys hockey at Witham – well done team!

Report

On Wednesday 17th January the Colts B welcomed Maidwell Hall for the second fixture of the season. The game started in a slightly scrappy fashion, with both sides struggling to hold on to the ball in the windy conditions. It was however Witham who first broke the deadlock with a goal from Henry. Maidwell then caught Witham on the break off a corner to superbly level the scores. The first half remained a well contested affair until, in the last two minutes, Ben claimed a well taken goal; this was then followed up by a goal that started from a goal kick and was moved beautifully down the left through some fluent passing and finished superbly by Oliver.

The second half Witham remained on top, playing some excellent football. Maidwell defended stoutly and deserve great credit but were unable to prevent further goals coming from Rafe and Henry. A second game and a second win for the Colts B.

The momentum continued to grow more and more as Witham finished the half 5-0 up. During the second half, the Maidwell boys grew into the game which made the second half a much more even contest. Despite their best efforts, the Witham boys hard work and skill began to pay off, resulting in a few more goals. Well done boys on a fantastic game.
