Last Netball Matches Before Half Term

20 Feb 2018

1st VII v Oakham 1st VII

Witham – 21
Oakham – 9

Witham were ready for a tough game against a very strong Oakham side. After losing last year’s game over silly mistakes, Witham were keen not to let the same thing happen and learn from mistakes made last year!

The first quarter was very tight indeed, with both teams cancelling out each other and marking so tight that it was hard to get the ball into either goal circle. The score was 2-1 to Witham after the first quarter. After a tactical team talk, Witham knew what they had to do and were ready to go again. The second quarter was still close, with both teams making silly mistakes under pressure. However, after five minutes of the second quarter, Witham started to excel. Bonnie and Sienna were marking very tightly, stopping the ball entering the goal circle. Poppy, Katie and Bella were working the ball up to the shooting pair of Ella and Mia with confidence. The half time score was Witham 7, Oakham 5. At half time, we changed a few tactics and started to build in some easy ways to force Oakham into making mistakes. Witham’s passing was slick, marking was exceptional and the shooting was on fire. Three quarter time was Witham 13, Oakham 7, with a final quarter score of Witham 21, Oakham 9. The girls listened, kept calm and produced a brilliant performance; particularly in the second half. This game has really given the girls confidence and belief; when they work together, this team is something quite special.  Just remember girls… “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much”! Let’s move into the second half of term with this belief! Well done to all the girls and thank you to all the supporters who came to watch.

U12A/B v Oakham U12B

Witham – 9
Oakham – 7

From the first whistle it was clear this was going to be a tough, competitive game. Both teams had to work hard to keep possession, with players constantly putting pressure on their opposition.  This meant that sometimes our passes were too rushed and we gave the ball away. However, we always worked hard to try and force Oakham to make a mistake and regain possession. Both teams played with enthusiasm and intensity, with the ball moving quickly around the court. At times, a little too quickly, which resulted in either the loss of possession or some easy interceptions made by both Witham and Oakham. By the final quarter it was still all to play for with 7 goals each.  For the last ten minutes both our attackers and defenders worked tirelessly to get the ball down to our shooters without losing possession. This was easier said than done as the Oakham players were making life difficult for Witham. However, our determination and persistence payed off and we were able to come away with a hard fought win.

2nd/3rd VII v Oakham U13C

Witham – 18
Oakham – 4

This was a game Witham dominated from the start, they were quicker to dodge, more positive with their passes and much more accurate with their shooting.  As a consequence, Witham scored four unanswered points in the first quarter. Oakham did manage to score a couple in the second quarter but Witham still dominated to give them a six goal advantage at half time. Witham continued to apply the pressure throughout the second half and ran out comfortable winners. A good whole team performance.

4th VII v Oakham U13D

Witham – 14
Oakham – 7

The newly formed 4th VII made a superb debut, comfortably winning against Oakham’s U13D team. The Witham team demonstrated some strong passing and excellent team spirit. Oakham had much of their attacking play broken down by Witham’s defence making interceptions and reading the game well. A few mistakes and occasionally being a bit slow off the mark, the Witham team let in 7 goals, but despite this the team played really well together. Doubling the Oakham score, Witham were the clear winners thanks partly to their accurate and calm shooting. Well done girls and thank you to Mrs Stanton for coming out of retirement to support the team!

U11A v Oakham U12A

Witham – 11
Oakham – 10

The U11A team had another tough game, this time against Oakham U12A team. They were challenged by the height and athleticism of the opposition but nevertheless worked hard on getting in front of their opponents and playing at speed. Despite that, the timing was a bit off in the first half and the Witham girls found themselves 1-2 and then 3-5 down. Undeterred they battled on and in the third quarter some really tight marking from Millie, Rose and Bunny and some great shooting from Charlotte (4 goals in that one quarter) led to the team finding themselves at 7-7 going into the final quarter.

Oakham then made more changes to their team and the Witham girls lifted their level once again powering through the first 5 minutes with Eliza and Millie really working well together and scoring quickly. There were uncharacteristically 5 goals missed in this quarter and the Oakham girls started to catch up, but the Witham U11s held on coming out winners 11-10. Rose was voted player of the match; Matilda and Lilia were tireless and impressed in the middle. Well done U11As.

U11B v Oakham U12C

Witham – 17
Oakham – 4

This was a super performance from the U11B Netball team against a very tall Oakham U12D team. The girls worked quickly to pass the ball into the shooting circle and were rewarded with an early goal; however, Oakham quickly responded and evened the score. Not deterred by the age and height difference our girls worked beautifully together and by half time the score was 10 - 1 to Witham. With many well timed interceptions and movement into space our opponents struggled to create many attacking moves allowing our girls to increase their lead to a well-deserved 17 – 4 win. Very well done girls!

U11C v Oakham U12D

Witham – 6
Oakham – 2

The U11C team had to really step it up a gear against the Oakham U12 team. With two years difference between the majority of the players, and several inches, it was no mean feat. There wasn’t a great deal between the two teams in the first half, with the ball moving between the two attacking circles fluidly. The play was scrappy with several loose balls and wayward passes. Tilly made the difference in the end though scoring goals when it mattered. In the second half Shivali added some spark to the centre court with her superb movement. Unfortunately we still struggled with some of the basics, but there were moments of brilliance. Clara attempted some challenging shots but had much more success when working with Poppy to get closer to the goal. It was a most entertaining and enjoyable game – well done girls.
